Ingå: Church, Observation Tower and Nature Destinations
Accommodation in Ingå
Church, Murals and Views
In the centre of Ingå stands the church dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of seafarers. On its north wall is the rare 16th-century mural Dance of Death. It depicts the course of the Black Death. The church’s maritime dedication and the mural’s striking historical subject give the town centre a distinctive cultural focal point.
Prästgårdsberget lies in the middle of the village. Completed in summer 2026, its observation tower offers views over Ingå kyrkby and Kyrkfjärden. The hill is also home to the exercise staircase: it is 104 metres long, follows a winding route and has several landings with benches. It is suitable both for training and for Sunday walks.
Nature and Coast in the Municipality of Ingå
The nature trail in Västankvarn, which opened in 2025, has circular routes of 1.75 and 3.2 kilometres. The two lengths offer a clear choice depending on how far you want to walk. The trail passes through old forest, a hazel grove, marshland and wetlands, and by the Kalbergshyllorna rock formation.
The Kopparnäs–Störsviken recreational area offers a different kind of coastal landscape, with 15 kilometres of undeveloped coastline. The terrain is suitable for walking, running and cycling; a birdwatching tower is available for observing migratory birds. Those looking for trails and open coastline will find a different kind of nature experience here than on the circular route through forest and wetlands.
The shallow, sandy-bottomed strait between Porsö and Ryssklobben, formerly Porsöklobben, is suitable for swimming and paddling. Large boats cannot pass through it—a key difference when planning your time on the water. Porsö is also home to a former coastal fort with decommissioned, camouflaged guns, fire-control towers and bunkers. Visitors can enter some of the bunkers; check current access conditions before your visit.
Gölisnäs lies at the southern tip of the island of Orslandet in the municipality of Ingå. Archipelago forest, sheltered bays, coastal cliffs and small paths across hilly terrain define the area. Several jetties, fireplaces, two saunas and overnight accommodation complement the landscape. Facilities may vary depending on maintenance and the season; check their current status before your visit.
Culture and Activities for Planning Your Trip
The local history museum features more than 20 historic buildings, most of which were built through community effort. The buildings and objects come from different parts of Ingå and offer insight into the municipality’s history. The Fagervik ironworks can also be explored on foot; visitors can learn more about the history of the works and the manor at the museum.
For activities in the archipelago, there are options on the water: the SE-Actions paddling centre rents single and double kayaks, SUP boards and canoes. Paddles, life jackets and waterproof dry bags are included in the rental price. Guided fishing trips last four to seven hours and depart from Ingå harbour, Barösund, Kopparnäs or the customer’s own jetty. Rental options and departures may change, so check the latest information in advance.
Buses and various transport services operate in the municipality of Ingå; archipelago transport runs year-round. Check timetables for your planned route before travelling. When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on: local history in the centre or nature and waterside destinations in different parts of the municipality. Then compare the accommodation’s location with the destinations you plan to visit.
