In the municipality of Raseborg, different interests lead to different discoveries: in Fiskars and Billnäs, the history of the ironworks shapes the way you see these places, while art, architecture and forest trails offer other highlights. Chocolate is also part of a visit. When choosing your holiday apartment, it is therefore worth first considering which places and experiences you want to shape your trip.

Ironworks History and Art in Fiskars

The history of Fiskars Ironworks began in 1649, when Dutch businessman Peter Thorwöste was granted the privilege of building a blast furnace and a hammer mill on the Fiskars River. Fiskars Village was founded in the 17th century and is now considered a centre of Finnish art and design. The “Life at Fiskars Ironworks” exhibition at Hammarbacken presents the lives of ironworkers from the 17th century to the present day. The former working life and today’s art and design scene thus coexist in the same place.

Fiskars Village offers workshops, events and shops year-round. At the foundry, visitors can take part in a seasonal metalworking workshop. If you are interested in history, this practical activity can complement your visit to the exhibition; check before your trip whether the workshop is offered on your dates.

Billnäs: Industrial Heritage, Trails and Chocolate

Billnäs also tells the story of the municipality’s industrial development: the ironworks grew into a centre of modern industry, and Billnäs is now a village. The nature and culture trail runs through the landscape from Pumpviken to Billnäs and is suitable for cycling and hiking. It combines an interest in industrial history with time outdoors.

At the Billnäs Chocolate Factory, you can watch chocolate being made through the windows and sample sweets in the shop. More than 100 different chocolates and pralines are on offer; the selection may change. Courses and demonstrations on chocolate-making round out the offering. A guided product tasting is also available at the end of a tour of the old Veitsitehdas knife factory. For courses, demonstrations and tastings, it is best to check availability with the relevant provider before you arrive.

Architecture, Exhibitions and Forest

In the centre of Ekenäs stands the Ekecenter, a marble-and-brick building designed by Alvar Aalto for the Ekenäs Savings Bank. At Chappe, the exhibitions are spread over three floors, all of which are accessible by lift. If current visitor arrangements are important to you, ask the venue directly. Ramsholmen in Ekenäs is a protected forest area.

There are two birdwatching towers at Läppträsket, where you can watch birds. The cultural and environmental trail by the lake is about 2.3 kilometres long; several old relics and natural attractions lie along the route. The trail, observation towers and historical traces offer different reasons to take time to explore the surroundings.

At the ruins of Raseborg Castle in Snappertuna, historic walls meet more challenging terrain, with steep stairs and uneven sections. The castle and the Lovers’ Path are unsuitable for people with disabilities. By contrast, the area around the castle and the trails offer easy access. Access to Villa Skeppet is also clearly restricted: the house at Snäcksundsvägen 8 can be viewed from the outside; a guided tour of the house is available by booking, but the grounds may not be entered. Check with the operator in advance to see whether a tour is available.

Getting There and Choosing a Holiday Apartment

Raseborg can be reached by car, bus, train or boat. A regional train runs between Karis and Ekenäs within the municipality. Selected bus connections include the route from Karis to Fiskars Village, sometimes via Pojo. There is no bus or train station called Raseborg. For timetable information and navigation, therefore, enter a specific place such as Karis, Ekenäs or Fiskars, and check current connections before travelling.

When searching for a holiday apartment, your planned visits can guide your choice: do you mainly want to see exhibitions and architecture, explore trails, or focus on the ironworks and what they offer? Base your choice on these plans and check the location of each accommodation using the listing details. This way, you can choose a base that suits your personal travel plans.
