Discover Tyrnävä: Industrial History and Culture
Accommodation in Tyrnävä
Tyrnävä brings together exhibitions and traces of its history with a distinctive culinary tradition. The municipality also includes the village of Temmes and the Markkuu Nature Trail as other highlights. When planning your trip, you can choose between culture, outdoor activities and longer nature experiences.
Art, Industrial History and Local Tradition
Meijerikatu is the centre of a carefully restored industrial complex dating from the early 20th century. On this street, on the second floor of the Myllykirjasto Library at Meijerikatu 3, is the Tyrnävä municipal exhibition hall. It hosts 12 to 15 exhibitions each year. Visiting an exhibition offers an art-focused experience, while the street’s industrial history provides a distinct historical connection.
Tyrnävä’s Esinemuseo (Object Museum) also tells the story of the area in a special setting: it is housed in a granary dating from the 1860s and is located next to Tyrnävä Church. At the museum, you can learn more about the life of Armas Pasanen, also known as Tyrnävän Peilipoika. The combination of the old granary and a personal story complements the view of the industrial complex, though the two places tell different stories.
Potatoes, for which Tyrnävä is known, are also part of the area’s distinctive character: they are described as pure. This is a cultural and culinary connection to the area, not automatically an activity or attraction. Along with the exhibitions and museum, it offers another point of interest when discovering Tyrnävä, beyond its architecture.
Temmes: Village Culture and Activities in the Municipality
The historic village of Temmes lies on the Temmesjoki River within the municipality of Tyrnävä. It is known for its theatre and vibrant cultural life, and was named Village of the Year in Pohjois-Pohjanmaa in 2024. A walking tour lasting just under an hour starts at the Temmes Cooperative Dairy, goes to the nearby Hongansilta heritage bridge and returns to the dairy. As tour availability is seasonal, it is best to check in advance whether you can book it for your travel dates.
Another activity in Temmes is the paved Temppuileva Temmes pump track, located in the rest area. It is suitable for BMX bikes, scooters, skateboards and inline skates, and is open year-round. The site has a large shelter with a fire pit and firewood provided. There is also an accessible outdoor toilet with handwashing facilities. You can combine an active outing with a break at the rest area.
Markkuu Nature Trail: A Longer Route and Places to Rest
The 10-kilometre Markkuu Nature Trail runs through the area around the Ängeslevänjoki River and its tributaries. It starts at Luonto- ja hyvinvointitalo Peukaloinen; the Metsänhaltia skills trail is at the beginning of the route. A suspension bridge crosses the river along the trail. Sections along steep riverbanks are challenging—a key difference from the shorter, location-based activities in Temmes.
There are several specific landmarks along the route to help you plan: 700 metres along the trail, there is a hut with a fire pit and a small playground. Another rest stop is about five kilometres along the route, roughly halfway, and has a shelter and a fire pit. There are two well-equipped fire pits on the nature trail; overnight stays are possible in a hut, a shelter or your own tent. You can choose between walking part of the trail and taking a break, or spending longer in nature with an overnight stay, while keeping in mind the challenges posed by the steep riverbanks.
When looking for a holiday rental in Tyrnävä, it helps to decide on your main interest first: exhibitions and local history, village culture and the pump track in Temmes, or the longer Markkuu Nature Trail offer different reasons to visit. Choose where to stay based on the experiences that interest you most.
