Hailuoto brings together nature trails, maritime history and glimpses of local life. If you’re planning a stay, you can choose from short, easy routes, longer hikes, historic sights and cultural discoveries. This variety helps you plan your holiday days around your interests—whether you want to enjoy the outdoors with your family, explore a daymark or learn more about Hailuoto’s history.
Trails for different kinds of holiday days
The accessible Marjaniemi Trail is 1.9 kilometres long, easy and takes about 30 minutes. Its manageable length makes it a good option for a shorter outing. If you’re planning a longer hike, the Hannuksenlampi Trail is a 5.2-kilometre loop. Along the way, you’ll find three forest ponds, as well as a lean-to shelter and a campfire site. The two trails therefore differ both in length and in the features mentioned along the route.
Another longer option is the 14.2-kilometre Marjaniemi–Pöllä hiking trail. It leads from Marjaniemi harbour through old fishing villages to Pöllä. You can choose between a loop and a route connecting two named endpoints. When planning your day, consider which distance and route are better suited to your plans.
Hyypänmäki is also a year-round area for outdoor recreation. Its trails are easy to walk and suitable for families. If you’re travelling with children, you can keep this in mind when choosing activities to enjoy together. The Kirkkosalmi Birdwatching Tower offers a different way to spend time outdoors: during the spring migration, it’s a good place to watch cormorants and birds of prey. The tower is also wheelchair accessible.
Daymarks and local heritage
Keskiniemi Daymark is Hailuoto’s oldest surviving daymark and was completed in 1858. There’s a clear way to find it: the daymark can be reached via an old walking trail. By car, you can drive to the end of Karvontie or Sunilahentie, then follow the old yellow trail markers. This lets you combine your visit with a walk through the historic surroundings, without specifying a particular walking time.
Marjaniemi Lighthouse is also part of the area’s maritime history and has been in operation for more than 150 years. On guided tours, you can climb to the top, where views open over the old Marjaniemi fishing village and the surrounding coast. Visitors interested in buildings, local history and landscapes will find several aspects to explore in one place. When planning your holiday, you can distinguish this experience from the hiking trails and insights into everyday life in Hailuoto.
Kniivilä Local Heritage Museum houses more than 3,000 catalogued objects. In 2024, it opened the exhibition Meren sylissä about the history of life on Hailuoto and its close connection with nature. The Kniivilä farm offers another glimpse into traditional livelihoods, showcasing equipment used in agriculture and livestock farming, fishing and crafts. The museum exhibition and the equipment at the farm offer different ways to explore history and ways of life.
The village of Ojakylä is home to the Ojakylä Windmill, a traditional windmill. Nearby are old grain stores and a large cogwheel. These features also make the site interesting to visitors who are curious about historic buildings and traditional technology.
Local brewing tradition
The local offerings also include Hailuoto Brewery Pub & Shop, where visitors can enjoy beer on site and buy beer to take away. Hailuoto Brewery also organises brewery tours and guided beer tastings. This offers a different focus for a holiday day than a hike or a museum visit. When choosing your holiday cottage, the experiences that interest you most can help determine the kind of stay you’d like to have in Hailuoto.
