The Ounasjoki gives Nivankylä its distinctive river and island character. The archipelago features natural sandbanks and long, shallow stretches alongside areas of flowing water. Summer activities include rowing, paddling and stand-up paddleboarding; in winter, routes across the ice by ski or snowshoe are also an option. The seasons therefore bring different highlights to a stay by the river.

The Ounasjoki and its islands through the seasons

There is a shelter on Iso-Kuusisaari, an island in the Ounasjoki. In summer, you can reach it by boat from the Ounasjoki. In winter, the route to the shelter crosses the frozen river, by ski or snowshoe. These different ways of getting there give the island destination a clear seasonal character. If you would rather experience the river landscape from the water, you can try rowing, paddling or stand-up paddleboarding in summer.

Ski trails, hiking and cycling

The Nivankylä river-island system has a seven-kilometre ski loop around the archipelago. On Pikkukuusisaari, an approximately two-kilometre ski trail features sweeping descents into the island’s flood channels. In spring, when snow conditions are favourable, the ski trails from Pikkukuusisaari can extend all the way to the city. A lit ski trail in Nivankylä can also be used for walking in summer. There are various ways to enjoy outdoor activities, from cross-country skiing in winter to a summer stroll.

Cyclists also have a useful point of reference: from the western side of Nivankylä, you can reach the city via quiet local roads in just over half an hour. This may be useful when planning your day if you would like to include cycling in your stay.

Nuuksvaara and the view over Nivankylä

Nuuksvaara is in Nivankylä, east of the Ounasjoki and about 15 kilometres upriver from the city. It offers opportunities for independent hikes in every season. From the summit, the view stretches across all of Nivankylä to the city. Nuuksvaara offers a different focus from the river islands: hiking and wide-ranging views take centre stage here, while the Ounasjoki archipelago offers water activities and island destinations.

Local history and a shared winter experience

Nivankylä’s history also has traces from different periods. Hiukanmäki, formerly Mäkihiukka, dates from 1910 and represents a typical southern Finnish Peräpohjala building style, complete with its farmyard complex. Hiukka in Nivankylä is a burial site from the Late Iron Age. The two places represent different historical contexts: Hiukanmäki is associated with a building style and its farmyard complex, while Hiukka is a burial site from a much earlier period.

In winter, the ice-skating rink is also a gathering place, with well-maintained ice, evening lighting and a heated changing facility. Families and groups of friends meet there in the evenings and at weekends to play and spend time together. If you would like to spend time on the ice as well as go hiking or ski on the trails, this is another local highlight.

Choose the right focus for your holiday

When looking for a holiday apartment in Nivankylä, your choice may depend on the experiences you want to focus on: the river and its islands, winter ski trails and ice skating, hikes at Nuuksvaara or cultural and historical discoveries. The mix of seasonal activities and local history offers a variety of ways to shape your stay around your own interests.
