Tuusniemi: Ravines, bogs and hiking trails
Accommodation in Tuusniemi
Ravines, fens and lake scenery give Tuusniemi a distinctive natural character. The Seinävuori Ravine Valley is particularly impressive: its unique landscape was shaped by the forces of nature over thousands of years. In 1964, the area was protected as a nature reserve under the Nature Conservation Act. Visitors who choose Tuusniemi for its natural surroundings will find hiking trails of various lengths and other destinations, each with its own character.
Hiking around the ravine and monastery
A hiking trail about 2.5 kilometres long runs around the Seinävuori Ravine Valley. The route starts and ends at the Rotkolaakso lean-to shelter. Some sections are challenging. If you are travelling with children, bear this in mind: the short distance does not mean the trail is easy throughout.
A longer hiking option runs from the Seinävuori Ravine Valley via Mäkimaja and Ahvenlampi to the lean-to shelter in Kaavinkoski. This route is about 20 kilometres long. The two trails therefore differ both in length and in their described routes: the shorter one loops around the ravine valley and starts and ends at the same shelter; the longer one passes through the places named above and ends in Kaavinkoski. When planning your hike, take the full distance and the endpoint into account.
The Luostarivaellus monastery trail also connects Tuusniemi with longer hiking stages. On the Tuusniemi side, it starts at the Särkeinen lean-to shelter. From there, it is about 7 kilometres to Lintula Convent; the total distance to Valamo is about 27 kilometres. The figures therefore describe a section to Lintula and the longer route to Valamo. If you are interested in this hike, you can distinguish between the two distances when planning.
Bog scenery and nature at Juojärvi
Silmäsuo is a nature reserve and a water-rich fen. It formed in a glacial kettle depression, and pine bogs shape the landscape around its edges. This gives Tuusniemi a different kind of natural landscape alongside its ravine: here, the fen and its formation take centre stage. For visitors who want to explore different landscape types, this distinction offers another consideration when choosing excursions.
Kannassaari lies in the central part of Lake Juojärvi and is part of a Natura area. There is a fishing hut, a campfire site and a lean-to shelter for temporary stays and overnight visits. Facilities also include a toilet, a waste collection point, a woodshed, a jetty and stern buoys. These amenities give Kannassaari a different character from the hiking destinations: overnight stays are also catered for here. If you do not want to focus your trip exclusively on hiking routes, you can consider this as a separate option.
Another way to explore the area
Tuusniemi municipality has an officially designated snowmobile route from the harbour in the parish village to Kaavi. The route connects to the Kuopio route; there is also a connection to the route to Outokumpu via Lake Juojärvi. For visitors who want to include snowmobile routes in their travel plans, these named connections are a distinct consideration alongside hiking trails and nature destinations.
You can choose a holiday rental or holiday home to suit your trip based on what you want to focus on: a shorter hike, the longer route to Kaavinkoski, the monastery trail, the bog area, a stay on Kannassaari or the snowmobile routes. For hikes, the distances and start or end points listed above matter; for a snowmobile trip, the route connections described provide a different point of reference.
