Eoste combines river landscapes with traces of cultural history and a range of ways to get active. The Eoste hoiuala protected area includes the Ahja jõgi; the Ristimägi burial site lies in a bend of the river in the village of Eoste. Other highlights include a longer canoe trip, a combined walking and cycling path, and community events organised by the Eoste-Valgesoo community. These themes give your trip a variety of possible focuses. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Eoste, you can first decide whether nature, cultural history or physical activity should shape your stay.

Ahja jõgi and Nature Experiences

The Ahja loodusala Natura site covers areas in Põlva County, Põlva Municipality and the village of Eoste. A longer canoe trip on the Ahja jõgi starts at Koorvere and ends at Põlva in Eoste. The route includes the confluence of the Orajõgi and Ahja jõgi rivers. Kingfishers, ducks and birds of prey can very likely be spotted during the trip. At the finish in Eoste, freshly prepared sturgeon or trout steaks from a local fish farm can be ordered in advance.

Sacred Sites and Local History

Ristimägi is a burial site in a bend of the Ahja jõgi in the village of Eoste and is classified as a historic natural sacred site. According to local tradition, people gathered at Keldremägi, an old sacrificial site; the grounds include the archaeological settlement site “Keldrimägi”, protected as a cultural monument under registration number 11473. The slightly different spelling helps distinguish the two references: Keldremägi is the traditional sacred site, while “Keldrimägi” is the protected settlement site.

Community events and gatherings organised over several years by the Eoste-Valgesoo community include a village workday, Shrove Tuesday, Jaanipäev and a family day. These examples range from community work to festive and family gatherings. A survey from 2012 also recorded a trace of history: at least five oak trees with crosses were documented along the road from Eoste towards Valgesoo, before the Porgandi Bridge.

Get Active

The combined Põlva–Himmaste–Eoste walking and cycling path ends in Eoste at the intersection of Mooste maantee and Kärsa-Eoste tee. It is suitable for walking and running for fitness, inline skating, roller skiing and cycling. This offers a different kind of activity from the canoe trip: the path provides several land-based options, while the canoe trip is a longer journey on the river.

The renovated smoke sauna at Männi farm is in a log house about 100 years old in Eoste küla, Põlva vald, 63206. From the smoke sauna, you can run down to a pond and jump in within minutes. The difference in timing compared with the canoe trip is clear: the pond is only a few minutes from Männi farm, while the river trip takes longer.

When looking for a holiday rental in Eoste, you can weigh up these different kinds of activities and the time they take: a longer river trip, several activities on the combined path, or the short walk from Männi farm to the pond. This lets you plan around the experiences that interest you most during your stay.
