Põlva: Sandstone, Moorland Trails and Experiences on the Ahja River

Põlva is a destination for travelers who want to combine experiences in nature with culture and varied activities. Particularly impressive are the Taevaskoda sandstone outcrops and the ancient river, which form the most beautiful part of the landscape protection area on the Ahja River. The Great Taevaskoda sandstone outcrop rises 22.5 meters above the river. This makes the landscape not only a beautiful backdrop, but also a tangible setting for walks, hikes and excursions.

Sandstone Landscape and Trails for Different Days

The marked 3 km Taevaskodade circular hiking trail leads to picturesque outcrops and pristine views of landscapes shaped by the forces of nature. Along the way, the thematic range extends into the world of legends, tales and films. Important for planning: only walking is permitted on the Taevaskodade hiking trail. A different trail length is offered by the 1.8 km Valgesoo educational trail. It runs as a circular route around the Valgesoo raised bog. The entire educational trail is accessible by wheelchair or with a stroller. At the beginning, there is a viewing tower and a fire pit. This combination of a short loop, moorland landscape and clearly defined landmarks can be particularly appealing when nature and a manageable excursion format fit together on a day of the holiday.

The way of life of ants is the focus of the Kiidjärve Ant Educational Trail. The circular route is approximately 1 km long and is complemented by a record-tall 42-meter spruce. Access is also described specifically: the educational trail can be reached by bus or train, with the bus stop about 10 meters away and the railway station about 50 meters away. The Roiupalu Educational Trail is suited to a longer walk. The 3.2 km route leads through the Ahja River Valley Landscape Protection Area and opens up views of the Ahja River and sandstone outcrops.

Active Experiences on the Water and in the Terrain

The Roiupalu Educational Trail can be reached by bus via the Kiidjärve stop near the RMK visitor center or by train via Kiidjärve railway station; the station is 2.9 km away. Those planning longer hikes can follow the 812 km Peraküla–Aegviidu–Ähijärve hiking trail. In the terrain, this long-distance hiking trail is marked with white-green-white color markings and signposts.

There are also various opportunities for cycling and winter experiences. Fatbike tours are organized in Taevaskoda all year round. From spring to autumn, they follow forest paths along the banks of the ancient Ahja River Valley; in winter, the tours also stop at the ice of Taevaskoda Lake. A sleigh ride on the trails of Taevaskoja leads through the ancient valley of the Ahja River, past sandstone outcrops and through snowy forests. The canoe trip on the Ahja River begins in Koorvere or Kiidjärve. The summer hikes include a pancake picnic.

For a quieter day during your stay, Lake Põlva and its beach offer several specific points of interest: there are playgrounds, a skateboard and roller-skating area, a beach volleyball court and pleasant walking paths.
