Vetepere: Tammsaare Culture and Paths through the Moorland
Accommodation in Vetepere
Vetepere combines literary culture with a landscape of bogs, forests and old farm tracks. When planning your trip, it is worth combining two different highlights: the A. H. Tammsaare Museum in Vargamäe and the nature trails around Simisalu, Matsimäe and the Kodru raised bog. This allows you to choose a holiday apartment or holiday house in Vetepere depending on whether you mainly want to explore the cultural site associated with Anton Hansen Tammsaare or spend plenty of time outdoors.
Tammsaare and the Culture of Vetepere
The A. H. Tammsaare Museum in Vargamäe is located in the village of Vetepere and in the birthplace of Anton Hansen Tammsaare. The Tammsaare-Põhja farmstead was his home during childhood and is connected with the setting of the novel “Truth and Justice”. On 30 August 2025, a new permanent exhibition was opened at the museum. The permanent exhibition in the museum building is wheelchair accessible.
The exploration of the site continues outside the building: the museum’s outdoor exhibition offers five different routes via a mobile application. The museum also organizes guided tours for groups and school classes covering the writer’s birthplace and the settings of “Truth and Justice”. This gives families and other travellers a choice between independent exploration and guided cultural interpretation.
Another cultural highlight is the Järvamaa Cultural Grove. It was established in 1992, and more than 100 trees grow there in total. The protected Vetepere Oak, also known as the Tammsaare Oak, is located near the museum. It is about 160 years old.
Bogs, Boardwalks and Observation Towers
Those seeking nature experiences in Vetepere will find several trails with different characteristics. The Tammsaare–Järva-Madise nature trail is located in the Kõrvemaa Landscape Protection Area. The Kodru raised bog near the museum has a 4.5-kilometre hiking trail; in the bog section, the route runs along a wooden boardwalk.
The approximately 7-kilometre Simisalu–Matsimäe nature trail also runs nearby. It leads across the Seli raised bog, through forests and along old farm tracks. The trail includes around 5 kilometres of wooden boardwalk, 16 information boards and an 18-metre-high observation tower. When planning your trip, you can therefore focus on different features: bog sections, forest stretches, old farm tracks, as well as the wooden boardwalk, information boards and observation tower shape this nature trail.
The Simisalu observation tower is located in Simisalu in the village of Vetepere and is also situated in the Kõrvemaa Landscape Protection Area. From the top, you can look out over the farms of Vetepere village and the boggy landscape. There is a large campsite around the observation tower, with space for more than ten tents. A holiday apartment or holiday house therefore remains an independent choice for travellers who prefer to stay in accommodation and plan to visit the trails as day-trip destinations.
