Albu combines traces of history with an impressive bog landscape and a variety of opportunities for active days. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Albu can tailor their stay to different interests: walks along boardwalks, culture at Albu Manor House or a cycling tour through the surrounding area. This creates a travel plan that combines nature and history without limiting itself to just one type of experience.

Bog Trails in the Kõrvemaa Landscape Protection Area

One important natural attraction in the surroundings of Albu is the Kakerdaja Nature Trail. It includes a 4-kilometre boardwalk through the Kakerdaja bog as well as a 3-kilometre circular trail by the Kalajärved lakes. The two routes therefore offer different options for planning your day: the boardwalk leads through the bog, while the circular trail takes in the Kalajärved lakes. The nature trail is located in the Kõrvemaa Landscape Protection Area.

The available parking facilities are also described specifically. At Suur-Kalajärv, the nature trail has a car park for six cars. At the Noku picnic area, there is a car park for twelve cars or two buses. You can take this information into account when organising your outing with several people or a larger travel group. The route lengths and different types of paths also help you plan the kind of nature day you want.

Albu Manor House and Historical Traces

The Albu Manor House ensemble includes preserved main buildings, granaries, an arched bridge, a storehouse, a distillery and a park. The park covers 5.1 hectares and is laid out on two terraces. Every summer, exhibitions are held at the manor house as part of Albu kunstisuvi. In addition to the bog trails, Albu therefore offers a cultural focus that fits into a travel plan centred on historical and artistic themes.

The local history also includes several specific places of remembrance. The so-called Albu Orphan School was founded in 1717 at Seidla Manor and operated on the land of Albu Manor from 1719 to 1740. Opposite the main building stands the Kukenoosi rehi production building. On 1 November 1861, soldiers of the Laadoga Infantry Regiment, summoned by a county judge, beat farmers from Albu and the surrounding area there. The punitive action later became known as “Albu veresaun”. Those interested in history will therefore find not only representative buildings here, but also difficult chapters of the local past.

Cycling and Guided Nature Experiences

At Jäägri Villa in the village of Albu, bicycles can be rented for rides on the paths of Kõrvemaa. One recommended cycling tour leads from Jäägri Villa through the village of Albu to Vargamäe. For walks, Jäägri Villa offers guided nature hikes for which you can choose the length and level of difficulty. These hikes can use both a safe boardwalk and a forest path. This allows active days to be organised in different ways, depending on whether you prefer to travel by bicycle, choose a guided tour or favour a particular type of path.

The A. H. Tammsaare Museum in Vargamäe has six unique visitor routes that lead through the landscape with the help of a mobile Vargamäe app. The Tammsaare-Põhja farm, the birthplace and childhood home of the Estonian writer Anton Hansen Tammsaare, is also located in the village of Vetepere. These places broaden the cultural perspective on the landscape to include literary history and biographical connections.
