Bakkebølle between beach, forest and the Stone Age

Bakkebølle combines a sandy beach on the Storstrømmen with forest paths, a historic railway line and impressive traces of the Stone Age. For families and other travellers, this creates a varied mix: A day can begin by the water, continue along a path through the landscape and end with a discovery related to the area’s history.

Beach and coastal landscape

Bakkebølle has a beach with a bathing jetty. Bakkebølle Strand is a family-friendly sandy beach directly by the holiday-home area on the Storstrømmen. From there, the view extends as far as the Farøbroen bridge. This gives a stay a clear maritime character without reducing the area to beach days alone. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Bakkebølle can therefore pay particular attention to whether their trip should be shaped more by the water, walks or historical discoveries.

Ørnehøj is located about 400 m north in the immediate vicinity of Bakkebølle Strand. For travel planning, the area is therefore particularly interesting for visitors who do not wish to view nature experiences and culture separately.

Exploring the Bakkebøllestien

The Bakkebøllestien runs along a disused railway line between Bakkebølle and Vordingborg. It is also a footpath, cycle path and bridleway. These different uses offer various ways to experience the landscape: You can explore the path on foot, plan a cycling trip or experience the surroundings from a different perspective. The Bakkebøllestien also passes through Marienlyst.

The path lies on the north-eastern side of Vintersbølle Skov. In the immediate vicinity of Bakkebølle, there are several marked hiking trails, including Heart Paths and the regional Sjællandsleden route. This makes it possible to adapt the choice of activity for the day to your preferences, without every outing having to be the same. Those who enjoy travelling at different paces will find several natural starting points for planning their days in the combination of railway line, forest paths and coastal landscape.

Forest, cliffs and sea views

The coastal path in Vintersbølle Skov is particularly characteristic. In the immediate vicinity of Bakkebølle, it runs along cliffs up to 10 m high. Many crooked beeches and oaks grow there; especially before the leaves emerge, views of the sea open up between the trees. These details give the walk a distinctly different impression from a path through flat terrain. This can play a role when choosing accommodation if you enjoy setting out in the morning into a landscape shaped by forest and coast.

Stone Age monuments and local history

Bakkebølle also offers points of connection to the distant past. The protected archaeological monument “Dysse eller jættestue, Bakkebølle” is a Stone Age site dated to 3950 to 2801 BC. The Langhøj, mv., Bakkebølle (#2) is a Stone Age long dolmen and is likewise dated to 3950 to 2801 BC. It measures approximately 10.9 × 15 m; its burial chamber consists of five supporting stones and a capstone.

The Rundhøj, mv., Bakkebølle (#1) is a Stone Age round barrow from the same period, 3950 to 2801 BC. It contains an unexcavated chamber with a large capstone and large kerbstones. A much more recent testimony is the Bakkebølle Sprøjtehus, which was built in 1865. It is located on Bakkebøllevej between house numbers 39 and 43 and formerly served as the site of the local fire pump. Thus, Stone Age sites and 19th-century local history come together in Bakkebølle.
