Grevinge
Grevinge combines hilly woodland, fjord history and remarkable traces from many eras. At its heart is Grevinge Skov, a deciduous forest in hilly terrain beside the diked Sidinge Fjord. Numerous paths and trails invite you to go for walks, including routes chosen spontaneously. There are no marked hiking or running trails there. Those who like to plan their days flexibly will therefore find a landscape where their own urge to explore sets the pace.
Forest, birds and prehistoric monuments
The diverse birdlife of Grevinge Skov includes woodcocks, pheasants, owls, songbirds and birds of prey. This also makes the forest interesting for travellers who want to experience nature not only through long excursions, but attentively and at their own pace. Ten prehistoric monuments are also recorded in Grevinge Skov, all of them dating from the Stone Age.
One of the notable Stone Age structures is “Hamlet’s Grave”, a Neolithic long barrow in Grevinge Skov. The designation as Hamlet’s Grave is probably not accurate, however. The monument is 39 metres long and 9 metres wide and is enclosed and marked by a total of 53 kerbstones. Another structure is the Frenderupgård dolmen, a round dolmen with a hexagonal chamber and an entrance. It is located near Herrestrup in Grevinge, at the corner of Holtevej and Odstrupvej, on the grounds of Frenderupgård.
Church art and landscape history
Grevinge Church also offers specific historical details. The altarpiece contains a fresco by Niels Larsen-Stevns from 1924 depicting the Resurrection and Ascension. The pulpit dates from 1654 and bears an inscription about its patron, university professor Ole Worm, who died in 1653. For visitors who want to combine church interiors with art history, this creates a distinct cultural focus within the trip.
The landscape around Grevinge also tells of the transformation of the fjord area. The Audebodæmningen embankment was built between 1872 and 1874; the first phase of pumping out the water from the diked area began in 1875. The Lammefjord land-reclamation works include a memorial created by the artist Holmer Trier from Vallekilde, depicting the various phases of the drainage project. In the wider regional area, Malergården offers insights through its buildings, rooms, garden and courtyard into the art and family history of the Swane family, as well as the history of their guests, travels and dreams.
Active experiences around Grevinge
There are other options besides walks for a varied stay. Prejlerup Ridning offers horseback rides in natural surroundings directly beside Grevinge Skov. People of all ages, social backgrounds and riding levels are welcome there. Sea trout can be caught at the Audebodæmningen, especially in spring and autumn. In the northwestern part of Grevinge Skov, traces of the former “Nødflyveplads Vig” airfield can also still be seen.
Grevinge Skov has a shelter with a fire pit and barbecue for about four people. It must be booked and can be reserved up to three months in advance for a maximum of two consecutive nights. This option is independent of a holiday apartment or holiday house and can be included in the travel plans as an individual nature experience. Those who prefer browsing and collecting will find an antiques and flea market at OLG, featuring, among other things, vintage cars, motorcycles, collectors’ toys, ceramics, furniture and hobby items.
