Holiday apartment in Fredericia Municipality – History, Beaches and Nature

Fredericia Municipality combines an impressive urban history with beaches, natural areas and a variety of leisure destinations. Historic sites and museums tell stories of past centuries, while the coast, forests and paths offer different ways to explore. Between Fredericia, the Little Belt and the surrounding landscapes, there are numerous specific destinations for days devoted to culture, exercise or nature observation.

Culture

At the Fredericia City Museum, a permanent exhibition presents the history of Fredericia from 1650 to the present day. Exhibitions and events take up the city's history and offer different ways of engaging with it. Regular events include the 6 July Days, which have been held every year in Fredericia since 1850. The programme includes, among other things, an evening torchlight procession, a gun salute, the raising of the flag, the laying of wreaths and flowers, and a parade through the streets of Fredericia.

A vivid historical counterpart is the Historic Miniature Town. It recreates Fredericia as it was in 1849 at a scale of 1:10 and is the largest miniature town of its kind in Denmark. Special AR binoculars create an augmented-reality experience that makes the miniature town of Fredericia from 1849 appear digitally alive. History is made visible both as a detailed miniature and as a digital addition.

Museumsgaarden Kringsminde is designed as a living museum. There, visitors can experience and take part in farming and rural life in Denmark from 1850 to 1950. The grounds also offer opportunities to go for a walk, visit the historic buildings and see the animals. Tailored guided tours or visits are available for groups, institutions and schools.

The Local Historical Archive also provides a special gateway to the past. In the reading room, visitors can view archive documents and newspapers published in Fredericia from 1849 onwards. The archive also preserves more than 60,000 registered images depicting locations and subjects from across Fredericia Municipality.

Leisure and Experiences

Admission to Madsby Play Park is free. The grounds include adventure playgrounds, a Mooncar track and a Tarzan obstacle course. The facilities are complemented by a mini-zoo, the Madsby train and boat trips on the lake. This brings various activities and opportunities for observation together in one place, without limiting them to a single type of experience.

For sporting outings, Hannerup Forest offers a mountain bike trail a little over 7 km long with 200 metres of elevation gain. At Østerstrand, there is a buoy-marked swimming course of approximately 500 m from spring to autumn. Training facilities and beach sports courts are also available there to all visitors.

Coast and Water

Fredericia is located in Lillebælt Nature Park, whose offerings are also reflected in the municipality's natural and coastal destinations. The Lillebælt Nature Park's Naturrum visitor centre in Kanalbyen provides information about harbour porpoises. From a viewpoint equipped with binoculars, visitors have the opportunity to watch harbour porpoises.

Skærbæk Beach Park has a Blue Flag beach. The facilities include picnic areas, a shelter area and several paths. Canoes and kayaks can be launched from the landing stage for a trip on the Little Belt. Bøgeskov Beach has also been awarded the Blue Flag and is located on Vejle Fjord. A path there leads through a natural area with ponds for European tree frogs.

Trelde Næs is a natural area with forest, beach meadows, high cliffs and a Blue Flag beach. At Trelde Næs Nature Centre, equipment for catching crabs and examining wildlife in ponds is available to borrow. The nature centre is freely accessible daily from 10:00 to 17:00. Nyskov offers another viewpoint, with a large observation tower overlooking the town of Fredericia.

History and Paths

Cultural history and exercise come together particularly closely at Fredericia Ramparts. The fortifications are among the oldest and best-preserved defensive structures in Northern Europe. A network of paths more than 18 km long runs through green areas, grasslands and old ramparts on Fredericia Ramparts. Several elevated viewpoints offer views of Fredericia and the Little Belt.
