Discover Tinglev: Wetlands, Trails and Culture

Tinglev combines a distinctive wetland landscape with a rich cultural and local history. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Tinglev can incorporate nature experiences, historical discoveries and active activities into their own travel plans. It is worth looking beyond individual attractions and considering the different types of experiences available: Tinglev Mose represents landscape and wildlife, while the church, railway history and sculpture park showcase other facets of the town.

Tinglev Mose: Nature Between Wetland and Lake

Tinglev Mose was originally the shallow lake Tinglev Sø southeast of Tinglev. A restoration project was carried out there from 1999 to 2004. As part of the project, the water level was raised by around half a metre to create habitats for many rare plant and animal species. Today, Tinglev Mose is a wetland rich in wildlife and consequently a defining part of the town.

A 5 km marked hiking trail runs through the wetland landscape. Around 600 metres of the trail pass over boardwalks through the marshland. A small observation tower in the southern part of Tinglev Mose offers views of the wildlife. For planning your day, it is also important to note that there are no car parks in the immediate vicinity of the Tinglev Mose route. All five hiking trails in Tinglev start at the bicycle shelter by Tinglev Midt, north of the library; they vary in length. The route descriptions at the starting point contain QR codes with additional information.

Cultural History and Special Places

Tinglev Church was built around 1100 and has a winged altarpiece from the 16th century. Cultural life in Tinglev includes both Danish and German associations. A clergyman with German sympathies and one with Danish sympathies use the same church in Tinglev. This combination of historic architecture and active association life gives the town its distinctive cultural character.

The region's history can also be explored at several specific locations. Olgerdiget is a defensive earthwork more than 12 km long between Tinglev and Aabenraa. An information pavilion about the defensive work stands where Olgerdiget crosses Olmersvej. Tinglev cemetery contains a memorial stone and 16 graves of prisoners of war from the prisoner-of-war camp near Gårdeby Mark, several kilometres south of Tinglev.

The railway is also part of the town's history: in 1864, Tinglev became a station on Den Sønderjyske Længdebane. One of Tinglev's attractions is Denmark's last railway kiosk. Grube's sculpture park offers a distinctly different experience. Frederik Grube's sculpture park lies behind the old smithy at Hovedgaden 105 and contains numerous figures of people and animals carved with a chainsaw.

Active and Cultural Travel Ideas

In addition to hiking trails, Tinglev offers activities involving exercise and water. AquaCross is circuit training with various elements on land and in the water. At Tinglev Swimming Pool, AquaCross is offered as a full-body workout; water aerobics also takes place there in the large pool. When planning your holiday days, you can therefore alternate between a walk through the wetlands, time by the water and cultural sightseeing.

Byskoven in Tinglev has an open-air stage and a clubhouse amid a deciduous forest. The covered open-air stage hosts concerts every year on Constitution Day, among other events. A small ring-riding event takes place in Tinglev in May. These dates and locations complement the permanent landscape and historical experiences with seasonal impressions.

Which Starting Point Suits Your Trip?

When looking for accommodation in Tinglev, you can first decide which focus you would like to have. For nature-filled days, the 5 km circular route through Tinglev Mose, the boardwalk section and the observation tower offer specific destinations. If you are more interested in history, your interests will lead you to Tinglev Church, Olgerdiget, the cemetery and the railway tradition. A holiday apartment or holiday home in Tinglev is therefore an obvious search term, especially if you would like to combine different holiday ideas in one place. The five hiking trails also offer different lengths for planning your day, so you do not have to limit yourself to just one type of excursion.
