Holiday apartment in Aabenraa Municipality: Trails, coast and culture

Almost 50 kilometres of the historic Hærvejen hiking and cycling route run through Aabenraa Municipality. The municipality offers hilly areas, deep valleys, extensive woodland and high-quality bathing beaches. The ring-riding festival in Aabenraa traditionally takes place on the first weekend of July.

Landscape and trails

Aabenraa has numerous signposted hiking trails. They run along gravel roads, farm tracks and forest paths, following the fjord in sections and also using country roads. The cycling routes include hilly paths, quiet country roads and coastal stretches. Free-to-use Bike Stations for minor bicycle repairs are available along these cycling routes. Those interested in mountain biking will find Kongehøjsporet, an approximately 12-kilometre-long trail through hilly terrain in the forests around Aabenraa.

Frøslev Plantation also displays a variety of landscape features within a small area: Among the spruce trees are oak scrub, deciduous trees, small lakes and inland dunes. From the Dragebænken viewpoint, there are views across Aabenraa, the fjord and Løjt Land, north of the town.

Water and coast

Aabenraa Municipality has 25 bathing beaches, including 11 Blue Flag beaches. In the area known as Løjt Land, the ferry between Barsø Landing on the mainland and Barsø connects the island with the mainland. Canoeing is permitted on the Grønå and the Sønderå; these are the only two rivers in Aabenraa Municipality where this is permitted.

Culture and history

Genforeningsparken is an important memorial site commemorating the reunification of 1920 and contains clear references to its 100-year history. A timeline in the park presents the history of the Danish movement in Southern Jutland from the First Schleswig War to the 100th anniversary of the reunification.

One of the notable historic sites is Brundlund Castle. It was built in the 15th century to house the administration of the town of Aabenraa. The castle park contains sculptures by Southern Jutland artists or works created specifically for Aabenraa. The castle's historic features also include the tower rooms and the cellar prison with graffiti left by prisoners. Rundemølle is a surviving watermill dating from the first half of the 13th century.

The maritime past is present in several institutions. The Maritime Kalvø Museum is located in the former home of shipowner Jørgen Bruhn and in the preserved buildings of the shipyard. Three exhibitions focus on the history of Kalvø, the shipyard and the ships, as well as Genner Bay and its surroundings. The Museum of Cultural History Aabenraa documents the town's maritime tradition in the 18th and 19th centuries through shipbuilding, shipyard history and voyages to distant coasts. The collection includes one of Denmark's largest collections of ship portraits and a furnished captain's cabin.

The Frøslev Camp Museum presents the history of the German internment camp Frøslevlejren from 1944 to 1945 and the Fårhus camp from 1945 to 1949. Several activities are available for children and young people, including an escape-room game in which participants are supposed to help prisoners escape. In Aabenraa's Nørreport district, Kunst i Nørreport is a permanent public exhibition featuring eight unique works of art. A guided tour of old Aabenraa leads through the cobbled streets and narrow lanes of the historic town centre.

Regional traces

At Andholm Batteri, three bunkers from the former Sikringsstilling Nord defensive position remain almost completely intact today. Aabenraa's location on the fjord and close to the German border is connected with Danish and German cultural influences.

Regional food culture is also associated with a specific place. Egnsmuseet Jacob Michelsens Gård is a regional museum in Aabenraa and a piece of living Southern Jutland history. During the baking weekends, bread and cakes are baked in the old oven. Visitors can talk to the baker and enjoy homemade bread or cake with coffee.
