Ertebølle combines a protected Stone Age site with a striking coastal landscape on the Limfjord. The preserved part of the “Ertebølle køkkenmøddingen” lies along a former Stone Age coastline. The site is internationally known and gave its name to a period at the end of the Older Stone Age. There is also a cliff with fossils in moler, a mostly sandy beach and paths through varied landscapes. This gives you some clear priorities when planning your trip: history, geology, the beach or a landscape route.

A site between the present day and the Stone Age

Its present-day location on the Limfjord and its former coastline belong to different time perspectives: one describes the site in today’s landscape, while the other reflects its connection to the Stone Age. Together with its international renown and its role in naming a period at the end of the Older Stone Age, the site has a distinctive cultural and historical context. If you are interested in prehistory, this combination of a specific place and a broader period name offers a particularly compelling way to explore Ertebølle.

Cliff, moler and fossils

At Ertebølle Hoved, a 20 m-high cliff rises from layers of moler and volcanic ash. The moler contains fossils of plants, fish, birds, insects and turtles. The cliff and its rock give the landscape a geological dimension: both its height and the composition of the Hoved stand out. The list of fossils ranges from plants to various groups of animals, highlighting the diversity of natural history associated with moler. For nature enthusiasts, the focus here is therefore not only on the shape of the coast, but also on the material itself.

Beach and landscape route

Ertebølle Beach is about 300 m long and consists mostly of sand, with a few stones. This specific description sets the beach apart from the rocky cliff landscape at Ertebølle Hoved: here, the mostly sandy shoreline shapes the view, while there, it is the cliff and its rock layers. The Rød rute Ertebølle passes the site and runs through open areas along the Limfjord, as well as heathland and woodland. If you enjoy experiencing landscapes on the move, this route offers a different focus from a stay centred mainly on the site or geology.

Paths to the site and Myrhøj

There is a car park and toilets at Ertebølle Hoved, near Gl. Møllevej 3. From there, a farm track leads to the “Ertebølle køkkenmøddingen” site; you can use it on foot or by bicycle. The track is part of National Cycle Route No. 12. This provides both a starting point at the Hoved and a connection between the site and a long-distance cycling route.

Myrhøj can also be reached from a car park: a signposted path leads there through the vegetation from Ertebøllevej. As access details may change, check the route before your visit.

Indoor and outdoor experiences

Stenaldercenter Ertebølle combines a large outdoor activity area with an indoor exhibition about the Ertebølle period. This offers two different ways to explore: the landscape outside and the exhibition inside the building. If you are planning a trip with a focus on history, you can complement your visit to the site with an indoor exhibition and an outdoor activity.

When looking for a holiday rental in Ertebølle, you can start with your interests: are Stone Age history and the site your main focus, or would you rather explore the cliff, fossils, beach and route through the landscape? These priorities can help you choose Ertebølle as a destination based on the kind of holiday experience you want.
