Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality offers diverse ways to experience nature, culture and outdoor activities. Between fjords, heathland and the open landscape of western Jutland lie historic sites, museums, cycling routes and unique insights into regional traditions.

Nature

Ringkøbing Fjord covers approximately 300 km², is a shallow brackish-water fjord and is surrounded by extensive coastal meadows, particularly near Tipperne and Værnengene. The fjords of the region are characterised by an open western Jutland landscape with abundant birdlife. During the spring and autumn migrations, tens of thousands of geese and ducks stop there to rest. The shallow meadows, open landscape and shallow fjord water at Tipperne make the area one of the most important European sites for breeding meadow birds and resting migratory birds. During the migration periods, thousands of ducks, geese and waders rest at Tipperne; birds of prey, including harriers, marsh harriers and white-tailed eagles, can also be observed there.

Large natural areas also characterise the municipality away from the fjord. Borris Hede covers 4,720 hectares, is Denmark’s largest contiguous heathland area and is home to numerous animal and plant species. Lønborg Hede is protected because of its wild and unspoilt nature and is a destination for a day trip. Skjern Enge covers around 2,200 hectares around the Skjern Å. Most of the area consists of meadows and wetlands with abundant birdlife, including white-tailed eagles, spoonbills, kingfishers and great egrets.

Paths and cycling

The landscape can be explored via various signposted routes. Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality has six signposted cycling routes: two national, three regional and the local Fjorden Rundt cycling route. The national cycling route Danmark på Tværs (N4) is 310 kilometres long in total, runs from Søndervig in the west to Copenhagen in the east and covers 62 kilometres within Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality. A further 65 kilometres of a signposted cycling route run here along smaller municipal roads and cycle paths through the coastal dune landscape, the flat countryside and areas with abundant birdlife.

The Skjern Enge og Å cycling route is approximately 49 kilometres long, runs over asphalt and gravel through flat terrain and is classified as easy. The Skjern Å also offers opportunities for extensive walks, salmon fishing and canoeing. The hike in Skjern Enge passes through Kalvholm and crosses the Skjern Å by two hand-operated ferries, offering views of the river delta.

The route in Skjern Enge has toilets, fire pits, observation towers, fishing spots, a picnic shelter, a campsite and a hand ferry. The paths are suitable for wheelchairs and prams. To access the hike, bus route 69 runs from Skjern to Lønborg; from there, approximately five kilometres must be covered on foot.

Culture and history

There are 10 living museums around Ringkøbing Fjord. At Bork Vikingehavn, visitors can explore Viking houses, a watermill, ships, a church and a sacrificial grove. There are also hands-on activities such as rune writing, making a leather pouch and archery.

A distinctive landmark on the west coast of Jutland is Lyngvig Lighthouse. It was built in 1906 and is the most recently constructed lighthouse on the west coast of Jutland. Visitors can climb the 228 steps to the top and enjoy views of the North Sea, Ringkøbing Fjord and the surrounding dune landscape. The grounds include a café and shop in Fyrmesterboligen, as well as a large nature playground.

The remains of Bagges Dæmning recall an unsuccessful drainage project; today, there are two bridges as well as a cycling and walking path.

Activities

Naturkraft offers a wind machine, the “Livets træ” exhibition, eight types of nature, explorations of the underwater world and a balance course. Momhøje Plantage also offers a nature centre, a playground, shelters, disc golf, bridleways, mountain bike trails and additional hiking paths.

The production of regional specialities can also be experienced in an engaging way. Stauning Whisky offers guided tours from grain processing to bottling. The production stages from malting to distillation are shown; tastings of the signature whiskies, including single malt and single rye, are available as an optional extra. At Stauning Whisky, every single grain is malted on the malting floor using traditional methods.
