Mill History and Culture in the Centre

Odder Museum is located in the centre of Odder, in a historic cultural setting. The centrepiece of this ensemble is the old Odder Water and Steam Mill, built in 1883. The mill has been preserved as it was when production ceased in 1955. The historic fittings and appearance are just as much part of the experience as the opportunity to explore three floors with old mechanics and machinery. The Odder Water and Steam Mill is also considered a rare example of the so-called half-height milling tradition; in Odder, the public has access to a mill of this type.

The Møllerens Stuehus is also part of the museum. The building originally belonged to the old Sandager Mill. Part of the exhibitions is dedicated to the history of this mill. One special collection is the Bjørnkærsættet: experts believe that the ceramics came from a distillation apparatus dating from the late 14th century. If it is indeed such an apparatus, it would be the oldest surviving example of its kind in Scandinavia.

Odder Church also reaches far back into the history of the town. It was built in the second half of the 12th century at a site where there was once a ford across the Odder Å and routes from the north, south, east and west converged. Fragments of 14th-century murals can be seen inside the church. The small Prydhaven garden is also located among the historic buildings of Odder Museum. It is designed as a typical rural garden from 1930; from early spring to late autumn, perennials, bulbous plants and roses bloom there.

Town Trails, Forest and Cycling Routes

For a break involving some exercise in town, the Hjertestien in Odder is a good option. The signposted walking route is 5.7 kilometres long and passes through the town centre. There is also a clearly described option for a bicycle trip: Kulturringens rute tre is a 19-kilometre signposted cycle route that leads south from Odder towards Horsens Fjord. The Banestien Horsens-Odder ends at Odder railway station, exactly where the train to Horsens used to depart. The historic connection with the former railway service is a separate aspect of the route and adds another trace of the region's past to the history of the mills.
