Rude tells its village history through specific places: old farms around the historic village centre, a remarkable blacksmith’s workshop and a memorial stone bring the traditional village structure to life. At Rude Strand, the Langhøjen adds a testament to the Early Neolithic period.

Village History Among Farms and Remembrance

The walking tour “På tur i Rude by” takes you through Rude and explores the history of the old village centre. The old farms surrounding the centre are considered evidence of the historic village structure. The tour thus draws attention not only to individual buildings, but also to how farms contribute to the character of the village.

On Rude Havvej, the old blacksmith’s workshop is considered a remarkable historic building. In the centre of the village, at the junction of Rudevej and Rude Havvej, stands a memorial stone to studiosus David Davidsen. Eleven names are inscribed on the stone; they are associated with the tenant farms or smallholdings Davidsen owned. The names shift the focus from the individual monument to the farming arrangements of the time.

The cultural spot “I fæstebondens spor” is located at the same junction. Completed in 2024, it is intended as a small oasis for relaxation and can be used for socialising and exploring history in greater depth. Its themes include Davidsen’s estate, Rude’s tenant farms and changes after the end of corvée labour. Rude’s history in the 17th and 18th centuries is also part of this context. The memorial stone and the spot share a location but have different emphases: remembrance of an individual and a broader historical perspective.

The Langhøjen and Coastal Themes

The Langhøjen is a long barrow from the Early Neolithic period, near Lyngbakkevej at Rude Strand. Two stone chambers are still visible at the site today. This combination of a precise date and visible chambers offers a different view of the past from the village history centred on farms and Davidsen: here, the historical horizon reaches back to the Early Neolithic period. In Rude, different historical periods thus stand side by side as distinct themes.

Rude Strand has a bathing jetty and public toilets that are free to use. These are practical reference points for a stay on the coast; at the same time, the visible stone chambers add a cultural dimension to the beach experience. The Kulturringen Moesgaard-Odder cycling route is 22.5 kilometres long and leaves the coast at Rude Strand. The beach facilities, prehistoric monument and cycling therefore offer different starting points for planning your trip.

When choosing a holiday home in Rude, your preferred focus may be the deciding factor: if you would like to explore the village’s history, the walking tour, farms and cultural spot are central; if you are more interested in the coast or cycling, Rude Strand and the Kulturringen take centre stage in your plans. Bus route 302 is also relevant for getting there. It serves Rude and runs between Aarhus and Odder. Check the latest departure times before travelling.
