Høsterkøb: Village Idyl, Culture and Paths Through Nature
Høsterkøb combines the character of a preserved village with cultural and historical discoveries and paths through a varied landscape. A preservation plan from 1966 preserved Høsterkøb as a village; at the same time, the surrounding green areas were placed under protection. Today, beautiful old houses, fields and orchards shape the scenery. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home can therefore choose Høsterkøb as a base for a stay that gives equal space to village history, church art and walks.
Village Character and Church Art
Høsterkøb is regarded as a village worthy of preservation and of particular cultural and historical value. The village charm can be experienced not only through the buildings, but also through the landscape surrounding the village. Lined with houses, Sænkesø lies in the middle of Høsterkøb and adds another distinctive landmark to the village’s unique character.
An important cultural point of interest is Høsterkøb Church. It was designed by Ulrik Adolph Plesner, while the decorations were executed according to drawings by Th. Bindesbøll. The furnishings also include a Renaissance altarpiece originating from Birkerød Church. For visitors interested in architecture, sacred art and historical context, the church therefore offers several layers to explore. A memorial stone for Princess Charlotte Amalie (1706–1782) stands at the intersection of Høsterkøbvej and Hørsholm Kongevej, adding a visible monument to the area’s historical character.
Åsebakken, Terminal Moraines and Paths Through the Landscape
The landscape around Høsterkøb is also unusually picturesque. A prominent terminal moraine ridge shapes the northern part of Rude Skov and Høsterkøb. Among the largest and most striking terminal moraines in Rudersdal Municipality are Maglebjerg, Åsebakken and Højbjerg in Rude Skov, as well as Skolebakken in Høsterkøb.
From the summit of Åsebakken, there are wide views across Sjælsø and the surrounding landscape. At the rest area there are tables and benches where you can enjoy the view. Åsebakken also has a walking trail of approximately 2 km leading to Jægerhytten in Eskemose Skov. A marked route of approximately 8 km leads from Åsebakken into Rude Skov and past Maglebjerg. The two different distances help with planning your day: Depending on how much you want to cover, you can plan a shorter walk or a longer marked route without leaving out the cultural attractions in the village.
KulturSlangen and Religious Tradition
KulturSlangen connects nature, art and history. Its route passes through Høje Sandbjerg to Høsterkøb and Birkerød. This allows you to add a themed route to your stay, focusing not only on the landscape but also on cultural connections. Especially if you like to alternate between activities and sightseeing when planning your trip, this approach provides clear guidance for choosing what to do.
A special tradition is the pilgrimage to Vor Frue af Aasebakken. It brings together congregations from across eastern Denmark for communal prayer and an outdoor mass. The pilgrimage takes place in spring, typically in May. The Vor Frue Monastery also contains a branch of the Benedictine Order. Alongside its village and landscape history, these religious sites and events give Høsterkøb another, spiritual dimension.
The Right Accommodation for Planning Your Trip
When looking for a holiday apartment in Høsterkøb or a holiday home in the surrounding area, it is worth deciding on your preferred focus first. If you mainly want to explore village history and church art, plan plenty of time for Høsterkøb, Sænkesø and the historical points of interest. For a stay with a stronger focus on nature, Åsebakken, the walking trail to Jægerhytten and the marked route into Rude Skov can shape the rhythm of your days. Families or groups with different interests can combine these focuses and adjust the distance of each route to suit their own plans.
