Kragholm – Landscape, Farms and the Archipelago Trail

Kragholm lies on a narrow land bridge between Vejlen and the inner end of Henninge Nor. Its special location combines open landscape with a settlement pattern whose history dates back to the late Middle Ages. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Kragholm will find not an interchangeable holiday resort, but a place with its own spatial and cultural-historical character.

Landscape between Vejlen and Henninge Nor

The terrain around Kragholm consists of a low basal moraine with a strip of individual Hatbakken hills. From Kragholm, there is an unobstructed view north across Vejlen. This landscape can be experienced with particular attention if you do not simply head for a single destination, but take in the forms of the terrain and the transitions between water, woodland and settlement.

Kragholm lies along a winding road and has preserved the loose settlement structure typical of clearance villages. With its stone boundaries and hedges, Kragholmvej is a characteristic example of road architecture. Farms, Estate Landscape and Local History

One of the notable architectural impressions is Kragholmgård. The intact four-winged farm complex has a residence west of the adjoining agricultural buildings. Kragholmvej 33 also conveys a concrete impression of rural building traditions with its three-winged farm, its brick-built, tiled-roof residence and its thatched half-timbered outbuildings.

Kragholm probably originated in the late Middle Ages through the clearing of land in the coastal woodland belt of Henninge. In 1472, Kragholm’s nine farms were small agricultural holdings liable to pay dues to Fårevejle. In 1812, Kragholm was parceled into large, irregular blocks. Since no significant new construction took place thereafter, the village has preserved its loose settlement structure and its defining proximity to the large estate complex. Kragholm was part of the cultural landscape around Fårevejle.

From Kragholm, Kragholmvej, lined with stone boundaries and hedges, leads to the estate avenue of Fårevejle. The present main building of Fårevejle was built in the Renaissance style in 1868. Brick-built portals decorated with lions mark the entrance to Fårevejle Estate. These features make the route through the landscape interesting also for travelers who prefer to discover historic architecture in the context of the local settlement rather than through an isolated individual visit.

Hiking on the Archipelago Trail

The Archipelago Trail runs through Kragholm and there turns into the woodland belonging to Fårevejle Hovedgård. The Øhavsstien - 13 section passes Kragholm Huse and Fårevejle Estate and continues to the diked Henninge Nor. The hill known as Iskælderbakken lies in the woodland. There are no parking spaces in the immediate vicinity of Øhavsstien - 13; you should take this into account when planning your day.

Iskælderbakken also has a historical peculiarity: In the past, there was a brick-built cellar there where blocks of ice collected in winter were stored. The ice was used to cool food well into the summer. The former ice cellar illustrates how the landscape was used in the past.
