Bagenkop – Harbour, Beach and Experiences on Langeland

Bagenkop combines the history of a fishing village with beaches, harbour life, coastal paths and special experiences. The harbour was established in the 16th century as a small fishing village on a headland. In 1858, the fishermen were able to use a new harbour at the southern mouth of Magleby Nor. Today, Bagenkop Havn is the largest fishing harbour in Southern Denmark and has modern facilities for sailors and other guests on the water.

Harbour, fishing and a lively local history

Those interested in the maritime past will find several vivid ways to explore the history of fishing at Fiskeriets Hus. There, you can try out an interactive simulator and steer a fishing cutter through the harbour of Bagenkop. The centre also features a fishermen’s home showing what it looked like in the past, along with the fishing equipment used at the time and workshops that supported the fishing profession. In the fishermen’s quarter, old original fishermen’s houses with more than 100 years of history stand; they are gradually being restored.

Bagenkop Church is also part of the local townscape. It is the youngest and smallest church on Langeland and was built in 1920. You can discover another craft tradition at Ulla Keramik: the workshop was founded in 1968. There, clay is thrown or shaped, dried and fired; the adjoining shop sells finished vases, dinnerware sets and jugs.

Beach, water and paths through southern Langeland

Bagenkop Beach is 650 metres long and 20 to 30 metres wide. Fine sand, a fine sandy seabed, good bathing conditions and calm water characterise this stretch of coast. The harbour is also home to the Vinterbadepunkt Bagenkop, with a winter bathing jetty and changing facilities. The area north of Bagenkop Havn is suitable for kiteboarding and windsurfing. The Nordmolen offers good conditions for fishing for cod, flatfish, mackerel, sea trout and garfish.

There are different options for walks. Ildsjæle Fodsporet is approximately 3 kilometres long and passes historical sites as well as the natural surroundings of southern Langeland. The hike near Bagenkop is an official signature tour in the UNESCO Global Geopark The South Funen Archipelago. The Bagenkop Art Route is 4 kilometres long, follows the coast through gently rolling terrain and leads back to the harbour. The annual Havnefest in Bagenkop also takes place at the harbour square of Ildsjæle Fodsporet.

Active and playful holiday days

Fællesskabsparken complements the natural and cultural attractions with various activities: it has 12-hole mini golf and a padel court. There is also a Tarzan course, a zip line and a playground with a pirate ship.
