Munkebo Bakke and the history of the town

Archaeological excavations on Munkebo Bakke have revealed a settlement and a centre of power from the Late Iron Age and the Viking Age, dating approximately from AD 550 to 950. However, the hill’s landscape dates back even further: during the last Ice Age, 12,000 to 15,000 years ago, Munkebo Bakke acquired its present form. The steep northern slope was formed as a terminal moraine after the Storebælt glacier came to an abrupt halt from the southeast.

From the observation tower on Munkebo Bakke, you can see Odense Fjord, Kertinge Nor and the Storebælt. This allows the history of the landscape and present-day orientation to be connected directly.

The miniature town and further discoveries

Munkebo Miniby consists of around 100 miniature houses. They are exact copies, down to the smallest detail, of the houses in the old fishing village of Munkebo as it was in 1956. The Miniby workshop can be visited during opening hours, provided staff are present.
