Holiday apartment in Kerteminde: Fjord, nature and culture

At Kerteminde Harbour, Fjord&Bælt offers close-up encounters with harbour porpoises and grey seals. Visitors can watch the seals and harbour porpoises being trained there every day at 11:00, 13:00 and around 15:00, and then ask the guides questions. The seals’ and harbour porpoises’ pool is a natural extension of Kerteminde Fjord.

Nature and water

Kertinge Nor, also known as Kerteminde Fjord, covers 8.5 km² and stretches for just under 10 km from Kerteminde to its inner end. Visitors can go on cycling or kayaking tours on this body of water. Ten kilometres of paths run through the three forests of Holmeskov, Tværbæk Lund and Storskov in the Lundsgaard Skove area; the total forest area is 2.5 km². Sybergland offers public access, good paths, a fire and shelter site, freshwater meadows and a newly established lake.

Romsø is also one of the area’s distinctive natural features. The island is uninhabited and has beautiful natural surroundings as well as diverse wildlife. Kerteminde Nordstrand has Blue Flag status and is a sandy, gently sloping, child-friendly beach with a bathing jetty, kiosk, mini golf, beach volleyball and handball courts, as well as toilets. Nordstranden is located in the vicinity of Kerteminde.

Paths and excursions

Munkebostien is a 20 km-long, continuous hiking trail that encircles Munkebo from Odense Fjord in the north to Kertinge Nor in the south. For cycling, the Hindsholm Rundt route is approximately 60 km long, slightly hilly and passes manor houses, burial mounds and natural areas. This brings together a variety of landscapes between the fjord, forest, coast and the island’s historic traces.

Culture and history

The Ladby Viking Museum displays Denmark’s only authentic Viking ship burial, dating from 925. The Ladby King was buried in his warship in the grave. The collection at the Johannes Larsen Museum includes works by Johannes Larsen, Fritz Syberg, John Olsen and Christine Swane. The Hindsholm Local History Museum provides insights into the history, culture and nature of the Hindsholm peninsula.

A settlement was documented at Munkebo Bakke that was a centre of power during the later Iron Age and the Viking Age. It dates from approximately 550 to 950 AD. In Kerteminde, Toldboden at Strandgade 3 is one of the town’s oldest buildings; the Odense merchant Niels Bager built it in 1590. Today, Toldboden serves as an exhibition venue for the Kerteminde Art Association and is also used for exhibitions by Østfyns Museums.

Kerteminde Church, also known as St Laurentii Church, was extensively altered in the 17th century. It has a burial chapel belonging to the Iuel family and preserves objects from the time of the Swedish Wars. The Kerteminde Cold War Bunker is a completely original and operational historical time capsule of just over 200 m², with its own emergency power and water supplies. Its command centre housed the leadership of the civil emergency management service of Kerteminde Municipality.

Festivals and the surrounding region

Kerteminde holds its Cherry Festival every year, and everyone is welcome to attend. The festival is rooted in the long-standing tradition of cherry cultivation in north-eastern Fyn. Fyn is located in the vicinity of Kerteminde. Odinstårnet is nearby, while Hellerup Church and Tornø are located in the vicinity of Kerteminde. In the wider surrounding region are Nyborg Strand, Dallund Castle and Stjerneskansen.
