Holiday apartment in Vizovice – Château, park and Wallachian tradition

Vizovice Château is considered the most important cultural monument in Vizovice. The present château was built according to a design by the architect František Antonín Grimm (1710–1784) in the modern French style of the time and has preserved this appearance to the present day. Its richly furnished interiors combine the styles of Baroque, Rococo, Empire and Biedermeier. They are complemented by collections of porcelain, Oriental objects and everyday items. The most valuable collection is considered to be an extensive collection of paintings from the 16th to the 19th century, including a significant body of Dutch painting and works by important Czech artists.

Culture

The park of Vizovice Château also follows a clear design concept: it combines a compositionally and axially symmetrical French garden with a viewpoint at the end of a clipped lime-and-hornbeam avenue. Next to it lies a freely designed English-style section of the park with a pond. Thus, in the immediate surroundings of the château, strictly ordered garden architecture stands alongside a freer park design.

The Church of St Lawrence (Kostel sv. Vavřince) in Vizovice is a three-nave Classicist church built in 1792, with a semicircular apse and a four-sided tower on the façade. It shapes the appearance of the town and its urban heritage conservation zone. Free guided tours of the interior take place as part of the Zlín Region’s Otevřené brány initiative on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from May to September, except during church services.

Janův hrad is now accessible to hikers; the entry of motor vehicles is prohibited. Access to the building and the viewpoint at Janův hrad is possible only in the presence of members of the Spolek Janův hrad Vizovice association when work is taking place there or cultural events are being held.

History

The town’s history also includes the Baťova dráha, a planned but unfinished railway section between Vizovice and Valašská Polanka. At present, traces and remnants of the construction work can be found in the area from Vizovice to Pozděchov.

Tradition and craftsmanship

Distilling in Vizovice has a history dating back to the 16th century. The first written mention of the production of spirits dates from 1585. From the mid-18th century onwards, the production of plum brandy became increasingly prevalent.

Another special feature is Vizovické pečivo, a centuries-old example of Wallachian folk art. In 2024, Vizovické pečivo was added to the list of intangible assets of traditional folk culture of the Zlín Region. At the RUDOLF JELÍNEK visitor centre, the company’s history is presented in restored rooms dating from the 1930s, from the period when the company was owned by Rudolf Jelínek. Traditional production methods stand alongside modern technology there.
