Brno is home to Villa Tugendhat, a pioneering work of modern residential architecture of the 20th century. The villa was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001. A 60-minute guided tour takes visitors through the building; the garden is accessible depending on weather conditions, and there are also exhibitions on the technical floor. Villa Tugendhat can be reached by tram lines 3, 5 or 9 to Dětská nemocnice, followed by a walk of approximately 600 metres.

Culture

The Anthropos Pavilion was built in 1962 for an exhibition that Professor Karel Absolon had created in 1928. In the Cathedral of St Peter and Paul, the bells traditionally announce noon as early as 11 a.m.

History

The casemates of Å pilberk Castle are an architectural curiosity and a major tourist attraction in Brno. Å pilberk was first mentioned in writing in 1277 and was converted into a large Baroque fortress in the following century. Part of the fortifications was designated as a prison for the worst and most dangerous criminals.

The underground labyrinth beneath the Zelný trh vegetable market extends up to 8 metres below the square. The tour of the labyrinth includes an alchemist’s laboratory, an old wine cellar and a tavern from a bygone era. The cellars beneath the Zelný trh vegetable market served as storage rooms for owners and local traders and were also air-raid shelters.

Nature and Activities

The Brno Reservoir on the Svratka is a leisure and sports area with beaches, boating and an attractive surrounding landscape. Brno has a relatively dense network of cycle paths extending throughout the city. Public transport in Brno began operating in 1869 with the first horse-drawn tram in the Bohemian lands.

Everyday City Life

Farmers’ markets are held daily at Zelný trh. There is a public toilet in the market hall. A freely accessible drinking fountain is located in the lower part of the square.
