Popelín: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Popelín combines a rich local history with a landscape of hills, forests, and ponds. A fortress was built here by the second half of the 14th century at the latest. At the end of the 16th century, Zikmund Kunrat Vrchotický z Loutkova converted the fortress into a two-winged Renaissance château with a corner tower.

Culture and History

Further historical and architectural monuments can be found at various points throughout the village. Popelín’s granary, built in 1733, is an example of high-quality Baroque architecture serving agricultural purposes. The Chapel of the Virgin Mary in Popelín is a late Baroque building in the center of the former Baroque spa complex. Near the former Popelín château stands a group of Atlas sculptures made of shell limestone, dating from the first half of the 18th century.

The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk can be seen in Popelín’s village square. It is an example of valuable sculptural work by a rural stonemason from around 1730. A sundial can also be seen on the church in Popelín.

Getting Around

Popelín lies on the Veselí nad Lužnicí–Jihlava railway line. Bus connections link Popelín with Jindřichův Hradec, Strmilov, Dačice, Žirovnice, and Počátky. The stage in Popelín traditionally includes a children’s bicycle race on a shortened route through the village.
