Ovesné Kladruby lies at the foot of Podhorní vrch. Podhorní vrch is 847 metres high, is considered the highest mountain in the Tepelská vrchovina and is an extinct volcano.

Nature

Near Ovesné Kladruby, PP Podhorní slatě contains some of the best-preserved complexes of wetland and peatland vegetation in the Slavkovský les Protected Landscape Area. Several orchids, as well as lousewort and the rare marsh lousewort, grow there. The area is also home to numerous protected bird and butterfly species.

A route to PP Podhorní slatě designated by AOPK begins at Ovesné Kladruby railway station and is approximately 4 kilometres long. The Milhostovské mofety are also located in the cadastral area of the municipality of Ovesné Kladruby. They are a protected natural monument safeguarding sulphurous gas emissions and can be reached via a 2.5-kilometre-long, yellow-marked local route. The Milhostovské mofety consist of circular craters, usually no more than 0.5 metres deep, from which sulphurous gases escape.

Geographical setting

Podhorní vrch is located in the immediate vicinity of Ovesné Kladruby. The surrounding area includes the mountains Spálený, Lysina and Sténský vrch. Further afield in the region are Novy Dvur Monastery, Hrad Loket Castle and the Monument Center of Europe.

History and architectural heritage

Ovesné Kladruby is mentioned as early as 1242 as a parish centre. The vicarage is a two-storey building erected in 1830 by Antonín Thurner from Teplá Monastery, modelled on Baroque farm courtyards.

The Church of St Lawrence stands on the site of an older sacred building that burned down. It is a single-nave Baroque church with a rectangular ground plan and a prismatic tower, dating from 1748; it was remodelled into its present form in 1747–1748.

The war memorial in Ovesné Kladruby has its original inscription restored, plaques bearing the names of those who fell in the First World War, and an eagle sculpture once again.

The stone Renaissance wayside shrine near Ovesné Kladruby was erected around 1600 at a crossroads on the road to the former execution site on the hill called Am Galgen. The shrine's chapel contains reliefs of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ with the Calvary group, and the Flagellation of Christ.

The rural estate “Venkovská usedlost” in Ovesné Kladruby dates from the third quarter of the 19th century and is an exceptional example of a rural residence with an arcade. The reconciliation cross on the road from Ovesné Kladruby to Mrázov bears neither an inscription nor a relief.

The municipal school in Ovesné Kladruby also served the municipalities of Milhostov and Vysočany and had three classes with 120 pupils.
