Maria Kulm is home to a national cultural monument: the pilgrimage complex in Chlum Svaté Maří.

Culture and Pilgrimage

The complex is of outstanding importance for the history of Bohemian Baroque architecture. It is also of particular significance in the Central European context because of its ambits and the unusual floor plan of the church. The first pilgrimage church in Chlum Svaté Maří was rebuilt in the Baroque style between 1687 and 1728 according to plans by the architect Kryštof Dienzenhofer.

According to legend, the origins of the pilgrimage site of Chlum Svaté Maří date back to the 13th century. A butcher's apprentice from Sokolov is said to have found a Gothic seated statue of the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus in a hazel bush on Chlumský kopec.

The museum tour includes a historical exhibition with a gallery, works of art, and sacred objects. It also includes an underground area with a multimedia installation documenting the changes to the pilgrimage site.

Tour and Visit

During the pilgrimage tour, visitors can see the church, the Chapel of Grace, the ambits, and the tower. A garden is also part of the tour; visitors can also take a short path to a chapel with a spring.

The pilgrimage tour is accessible daily from 09:00 to 16:00, free of charge and without a guided commentary. Free parking spaces are available in front of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on J. W. Goetheho Square.

Direct bus routes 208 and 210 connect Sokolov with Chlum Svaté Maří.

Nature and Landscape

Only sparse vegetation grows on the strongly acidic substrates of the reclaimed Lítovská spoil heap; unique nature with unusual flora and fauna is developing there. A path leads through this unique landscape, which was created by lignite mining.

Other Sacred Sites

The Chapel of Our Lady of Help is a restored brick chapel on Drsný vrch at the edge of the forest. It was closed.
