Nature and trails

A powerful karst spring rises beneath the rock near the Cave of St. Ivan. The cave is accessible from the church and is located in an original karst-like travertine cave in the rock; its defining feature is the portal of an old Renaissance church dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

The Svatojánský okruh educational trail is a 4 km circular route with 11 stations. It begins at the monastery in Svatý Jan pod Skalou and leads via a steep climb to the “U kříže” viewpoint on Skála. The circular route passes through the karst canyon of the Kačák (Loděnice) stream and explores the limestone formation known as “kozí hřbety”. In the immediate vicinity, it leads to the Solvayovy lomy open-air museum, where the attractions include a museum of limestone mining, a ride on a narrow-gauge railway and a visit to a mine gallery.

After the first ascent, the Cesta Vojty Náprstka hiking trail reaches the pilgrimage site of Svatý Jan pod Skalou.

Culture and history

The Benedictine monastery has stood in Svatý Jan pod Skalou for almost 1,000 years. The Church of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist is an early Baroque building erected in 1661 by the architect C. Lurago.

The Svatojánské Museum is housed in a historic former school building belonging to the municipality, dating from 1822. It presents a permanent exhibition on the history of the municipality and preserves a 19th-century embroidery collection belonging to the local Berger noble family.

The village has an information centre for the Český kras Protected Landscape Area, which helps visitors find their way around the municipality and its immediate surroundings.
