Culture and history

The small late Baroque Church of St. Simon and Jude stands on the road in the center of Skřipel. Before 1232, Ostrov Monastery held the right of presentation to the church in Skřipel.

Southeast of the village, the important Šance archaeological site is located in the cadastral area of Skřipel, at the U Šancí site. It consists of quadrangular earthwork enclosures covering an area of 105 × 125 meters; the interior lies approximately 1 meter higher than the surrounding terrain. The interpretation of Šance remains open: it may have been a Celtic sanctuary or a fortification from historical times.

Another archaeological point of reference is Skřipel 5, an area in the ÚAN I category. It is located 500 meters southwest of the village on the right bank of the Šiberna, is associated with prehistoric agricultural history, and contains documented or well-founded suspected archaeological finds.

Landscape

The Skřipelská alej is designated as a protected tree avenue; it was first designated on January 1, 1987. The avenue leads west from Osov Chateau toward Skřipel and is planted exclusively with horse chestnut trees (Aesculus hippocastanum).

Things to do

The Podbrdský Čtyřlístek comprises four color-coded circular hiking trails. They pass through Skřipel and the surrounding villages of Lážovice, Vižina, and Velký Chlumec and meet in the center of Osov. The individual trails are 6–8 km long and are primarily intended for hikers; they can also be ridden with trekking or, preferably, mountain bikes.

The “Vyjížďka za legendárním Horymírem” cycle tour leads to Skřipel via the protected horse chestnut avenue. It passes through Skřipel and then returns to Hostomice railway station via road II/115.
