Culture and History
Nižbor Castle was built in the mid-13th century on a rocky promontory above the confluence of the Berounka and the Habrový potok stream. It is an immovable cultural monument; King Přemysl Otakar II is considered a possible builder.
In the area around the Celtic oppidum of Stradonice, Celtic settlement shaped the region around 500 BC. The oppidum covered approximately 90.3 hectares. The area was probably divided into an acropolis and an outer bailey, while the remains of the fortifications, rebuilt twice, have survived only fragmentarily. The Celtic oppidum of Stradonice was probably an important centre of trade and production in what was then Central Europe.
Glass and Education
The entire premises of the Rückl glassworks are accessible. Guided tours with commentary showcase individual production processes and traditional glassmaking techniques. At the Rückl factory shop, visitors can purchase an experience at the glassworks or a glass-cutting experience.
The Celtic Culture Information Centre at Nižbor Castle is open every year from May to November. Using multimedia projections, it presents the migration of the Celts through Europe, their religion, their craftsmanship and their everyday life.
Trails and Landscape
A red-marked hiking trail leads from Beroun via Zdejcina, Stradonice and Nižbor to Roztoky and Křivoklát.
