The territory of the Karlštejn National Nature Reserve also includes the cadastral area of Bubovice. The reserve is an extensive forest landscape divided by the valleys of the Budňanský, Bubovický and Loděnice streams, featuring geological profiles, paleontological sites, and above-ground and underground karst formations.
Culture and Trails
The Skanzen Solvayovy lomy open-air museum is a museum of limestone mining and transport in the Bohemian Karst. It was established in a disused limestone quarry known by the names “U Paraplete” and “Na stydlých vodách.”
From Bubovice, the open-air museum can be reached via a flat route approximately 2 kilometres long, taking around 20 minutes. It is initially marked as a yellow hiking trail with a hammer symbol and leads along a field track to the quarry. Also from Bubovice, a gravel path approximately 1.5 kilometres long leads to the Dendrologická stezka Bubovice dendrological educational trail. The trail has one station and is designed for a visit lasting approximately one hour.
Nature
In 2000, the Karlštejn National Nature Reserve was awarded the Council of Europe Diploma for Protected Areas; the award was renewed in 2020. Below Bubovice, in the floodplain of the Bubovický stream, lies a wetland restoration area within the Český kras Protected Landscape Area and the Karlštejn National Nature Reserve.
The wetland is intended to function as a periodic habitat: after autumn rains, the spring snowmelt or heavy rainfall, it should fill with water; during drier periods, it may possibly dry out completely. Restoring the wetland contributes to expanding a habitat suitable for the life and reproduction of amphibians.
The Bubovický oak, Bubovický dub, was designated a memorial tree in 1986. Bubovický dub is a 240-year-old pedunculate oak measuring 20 metres in height and 375 centimetres in trunk circumference; these measurements were taken in 2009. In the vicinity of Bubovice, the Arnoldka cave in the Čeřinka quarry is considered the deepest known cave in Bohemia, extending 111 metres below the surface.
In the vicinity of Bubovice, the Bubovický stream features cascading waterfalls. They are particularly impressive in winter, spring or after rain; in dry years, they may remain without water for longer periods. The Bubovice Waterfalls are most easily reached from Srbsko via the blue-marked hiking trail in the vicinity of Bubovice.
History and Culture
The builder of the Chapel of St. Adalbert was the Svatojánský abbot Emilián Koterovský; he commissioned Kryštof Dientzenhofer to design and build the chapel. The ruins of the Chapel of St. Adalbert are considered a remarkable example of small-scale sacred architecture in Bohemia and were declared a cultural monument in 2016.
Events
Traditional events in Bubovice include the children’s masked carnival Maškarní karneval pro děti and the witch-burning festival Pálení čarodějnic.
