Culture and History

Liteň Chateau is a protected cultural monument dating from the Renaissance, with Baroque alterations and a park; it is associated with the poet Svatopluk Čech. The Zámek Liteň collection comprises 57 registered objects of visual culture from the estates of Jarmila Novotná and the Daubek family. Following its successful revitalization in 2012 and 2013, the park of Liteň Chateau is once again open to the public.

The protected Daubek family crypt in Liteň is a Neo-Renaissance building dating from 1888, designed by Antonín Wiehl. The Jewish cemetery in Liteň was established in 1680 and contains Baroque gravestones as well as a Neo-Romanesque mortuary chapel. The Church of St Peter and Paul was originally a Gothic church from the 13th century and was rebuilt in the Baroque style in the 17th century.

The protected statue of Svatopluk Čech in Liteň was created in the 1930s at the Hořice School of Stonecutting, based on a design by J. Mach. A monument featuring a larger-than-life statue in Liteň’s municipal gardens commemorates Svatopluk Čech’s four-year stay there during his childhood and the setting of his poem „Ve stínu lípy“.

Events and Insights

The Jarmila Novotná Festival was established as part of efforts to revive cultural and musical life in the grounds of Liteň Chateau, which are historically associated with the Daubek family and opera singer Jarmila Novotná. Its programme regularly brings together music, education, film, theatre, visual arts and other creative disciplines.

The local museum is housed in the former rectory, where visitors can learn about the lives of Jarmila Novotná and Svatopluk Čech.
