Alaminos: Churches, Koulas and Village History
Accommodation in Alaminos
Alaminos combines religious architectural history, local memory and cycling. The main church is dedicated to Saint Mamas; a mosaic on its western exterior wall depicts the saint. A 19th-century icon complements this theme, while the stone Koulas fortress, a monument and traditional village wells bring other aspects of local history to mind. Two mountain biking routes start at Alaminos Beach. When looking for a holiday rental, you can first consider whether cultural history, exercise or both should shape your stay.
The Main Church and Depictions of Saint Mamas
The main church in Alaminos was completed in 1992. Its dedication to Saint Mamas and the mosaic on its western exterior wall bring the same saint together in two places: as the dedication of the building and as a motif on its exterior. This architectural detail thus connects building history with religious imagery.
Inside the main church is a 19th-century icon of Saint Mamas. It shows him seated on a lion and holding a lamb; it was transferred from Alaminos’s older church. The icon therefore carries its own trace of time alongside its subject. Together with the mosaic, it offers a comparison between two depictions of the same saint: an exterior mosaic and an icon inside the main church.
The Fortress and Places of Remembrance
The stone Koulas fortress in Alaminos is about eight metres high and was built around the 15th century. The Monument to the Five Heroes commemorates five men who died on 20 July 1974. The traditional village wells were established in 1954 and recall how women once filled their water jars there. The fortress, monument and wells shift the focus from architecture to historical commemoration and former everyday practices: the latter two places preserve memories in different ways.
The Feast Day and Mountain Biking Routes
The community of Alaminos celebrates the feast day of Saint Mamas on 2 September with a procession of his icon. The icon thus features as part of a religious occasion as well as an artwork in the main church. If you want to plan your trip around this feast day, check the dates for your travel year.
Two mountain biking routes already differ in their names: “Alaminos Mountain Biking Demanding” and “Alaminos Mountain Biking Moderate”. Both start at Alaminos Beach. The English titles indicate different levels of challenge, while sharing the same starting point. If you would like to include cycling in your travel plans, you can use the titles as a first point of comparison and consider which route you would like to explore further. For a travel group with different interests, village history and cycling are two distinct themes to enjoy side by side. You can tailor your search for a holiday rental to the mix you want.
