Landscape and Views in Ravni Kotari
At 164.6 metres above sea level, Ražovljeva glavica is the highest point in the municipality. The 165-metre-high hill lies east of Škabrnja and was the settlement’s most important defensive position. From the summit, the view extends across the Ravni Kotari plain, olive groves and wind turbines on the horizon. Alongside a Croatian flag, a tank and an armoured vehicle stand on the plateau. These striking features shape the site just as much as its location in the predominantly flat landscape.
Cyclists also have a specific nearby route to consider: of seven published routes, the Benkovac–Nadin–Smilčić–Benkovac circular route passes closest to Škabrnja. The loop is 44.8 kilometres long and has 449 metres of elevation gain.
Churches and Memorial Sites
The Church of St Luke dates from the 13th century. Its pointed Gothic vault was built in the 15th century, and the church has been fully restored. The Church of St Mary was built in the 11th century as a central structure with six apses and has been restored and conserved. The parish of the Assumption of Mary has also existed since 1686. The new parish church of the Assumption of Mary was consecrated on 8 August 2004.
The memorial sites commemorate the people who were killed or fell in Škabrnja. The Central Cross and the memorial are dedicated to Croatian soldiers and civilians. The Ranjena golubica monument was erected in November 1999 and commemorates 27 Croatian defenders and civilians. On 6 June 1996, the mass grave at Škabrnja was discovered; 27 people were exhumed, including one defender and 26 civilians.
The Škabrnja Memorial Centre occupies two floors. The ground floor houses a multimedia hall, while a memorial room bearing the names of the victims is located above it. Wreaths are laid and candles lit at the mass-grave monument each year on 18 November. The municipal day on 18 October is also marked by a commemoration: wreaths are laid at the Cemetery of St Luke. These sites and dates lend a solemn historical dimension to a visit.
Local Life, Agriculture and Activities
Trg dr. Franje Tuđmana is the centre of Škabrnja and serves as a venue for major municipal and church events. The square is also home to a 340-centimetre-tall bronze monument to Dr Franjo Tuđman, erected on 22 September 2001. The KUD Škabrnja cultural association was founded in 2000 to preserve local customs and regional folklore through music and dance.
Olive cultivation and olive oil production have a long tradition in the municipality. Among the fruit crops grown here, the Marasca sour cherry is the most widely represented. A smaller orchard at the Kod bunara site covers 0.4 hectares and contains about 150 trees. Marasca cherries are traditionally used to make liqueurs, spirits, vitamin syrups, juices and jams, as well as being frozen or dried. The combination of olive and cherry cultivation makes local agriculture a distinctive subject to explore.
The municipal Vlačine sports centre covers about 55,000 square metres. It includes a football pitch, a small-sided football pitch, a padel court, a multi-purpose court, a basketball court and an outdoor fitness area. All the courts are lit, so you can play there after sunset too. For travel, county road Ž6021, on the Zemunik Gornji–Škabrnja–Zapužane–Miranje route, passes through Škabrnja, and daily bus services connect the municipality with the county seat; bus stops are located within the municipality.
