Coast and Islands

Janica 1 Beach is partly sandy and partly concrete and is located in the centre of Pakoštane. Pilatuš Beach combines sand and pebbles with small coves and shade from pine trees and lies around 1 km northwest of the centre of Pakoštane.

Bužakovina Beach offers fine, powdery sand and shallow, child-friendly water in a deep bay 500 m west of Pakoštane. Punta Beach near the centre of Pakoštane has a pebble beach and a sandy seabed, providing easy access to the sea. Vrgada Island is connected to Pakoštane by a regular boat service and offers sandy and pebly beaches.

Nature and Trails

The ornithological reserve on Lake Vrana was designated in 1983 and covers 8.83 km². The Crkvine Visitor Centre at the ornithological reserve on Lake Vrana is located between Pakoštane and Vrana; from Pakoštane, it can be reached in the direction of Vrana via the Adriatic Coastal Road after 2.4 km. It is located in the northwestern part of the nature park, within the ornithological reserve at the entrance to the wooden educational trail “Birds of Vransko Lake”.

A cycling route in Vrana Lake Nature Park leads from Prosika via the surroundings of Drage and Pakoštane towards Crkvine. The Crkvine Trail follows a historic route between the Vrana Field and the sea; the traditional route led to the harbour of Pakoštane and Bužakovina Bay. The Pakoštane–Prosika–Crkvine–Maškovića Han cycle path is 40.4 km long and begins in front of the main church in Pakoštane.

From the Kamenjak viewpoint, there are views of the Kornati archipelago, Murter Island, Pirovac, Drage and Pakoštane.

Culture and History

The Church of Sveti Justina was built in 1794 on the foundations of an older church and stands on the island of the same name directly in front of the centre of Pakoštane. The Church of the Ascension of the Lord in the centre of Pakoštane was built of stone in 1906.

The remains of the Church of St Mary have been preserved at the Crkvine archaeological site; it was probably built around 800 AD on the foundations of a Roman villa. Above the entrance of an old stone house in Bužak is a Glagolitic inscription by Jure Škiljić from 1606. Bužak is considered the heart of Pakoštane; records document a fortification there since 1597.

Activities on the Water and Land

The Three Island Trail uses three small islands off Pakoštane as a special hiking and swimming route. The Three Island Tour starts at the Pakoštane pier or Janice Beach; the islands can be reached by boat, pedal boat or stand-up paddleboard.

Boats to Kornati National Park depart from Pakoštane. Boat excursions from Pakoštane to Kornati National Park also visit Telašćica Nature Park. In Pakoštane, there are opportunities for diving, underwater fishing, freshwater fishing on Lake Vrana, windsurfing, sailing and jet skiing, as well as a beach volleyball court. For cyclists, there are, among other things, a recreational cycling route on a gravel road to Biograd and routes around Lake Vrana.
