Municipality of Lišane Ostrovičke: Village life between Ravni kotari and Bukovica
Accommodation in Municipality of Lišane Ostrovičke
The village of Lišane Ostrovičke lies at the edge of a field on a sunny slope, next to a drinking-water spring. As a typical village of Ravni kotari, it showcases the municipality’s rural character. At the same time, its semicircular position creates a geographical contrast: Lišane Ostrovičke forms a natural boundary between the Kotari to the south and the karst plateau of Bukovica to the north. Visitors who plan their holiday around the landscape and regional culture will find specific points of interest here beyond a coastal or city stay.
Landscape between the Kotari and Bukovica
The slope, the edge of the field and the village’s position at the transition to Bukovica describe its character more precisely than any single label. The municipality also partly encompasses the area of Trolokve. There, marsh and lake sediments made up of sand and mud can be found; the swampy ground is associated with an impermeable, muddy soil layer. These landscape features give the area another, distinctly different facet. They can help you decide whether you are primarily interested in village life, the boundary with the karst plateau or the distinctive features of the Trolokve area.
Singing, dance and traditional instruments
The local culture includes “Lišanska misa”, a religious folk-singing tradition related to the secular singing of the Lišane area. The cultural association KUD “Sv. Nikola Tavelić” is committed to preserving local traditions, including this form of singing. Kukulešće is also characterised by its distinctive movements: men and women hold hands and dance in a circle, placing their feet fully on the ground and jumping to the rhythm set by the Cvitara player. Cvitare are harmonica-like instruments that were played in Lišane during circle dances.
Other instruments offer different insights into regional music culture. Diple are traditional wind instruments played with six fingers and made from specially treated goat or sheep hide. Svirale, also called Dvojnice, are made of wood and have two pipes: the melody is played on the right, while the left provides the accompaniment. These differences also make the instruments interesting to travellers who, alongside the landscape and churches, are interested in sound, construction and musical traditions.
Churches and local history
The old Baroque parish church of Sv. Mihovil arkanđel in Lišane Ostrovičke dates from 1663. The parish church of Sv. Nikola Tavelić tells a different story: it was built between 1975 and 1977 as a votive shrine to plans by the architect Vinko Galić, and consecrated in 1978. The two buildings represent different periods in the history of the area. After the population returned, the residents of Lišane also began organising a traditional night-time small-sided football tournament.
Transport routes and choosing where to stay
The Zadar–Benkovac–Kistanje–Knin road and the Zadar–Knin railway line pass through the municipality. The “Pirovac” motorway junction on the Adriatic Motorway is 15 kilometres from the municipality. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, it therefore makes sense to start by considering the kind of holiday you want: village and landscape, regional traditions or convenient access to transport routes. The Municipality of Lišane Ostrovičke brings these themes together in a clearly defined location between the Kotari and the karstic Bukovica.
