The Municipality of Ružić lies between the mountains of Svilaja and Moseć. Its central landscape is Petrovo polje, through which the Čikola River flows. Here, a wide plain, river landscape and mountain ranges come together to create a destination focused on nature and cultural history. Otavice gives your exploration a particular point of reference: the village lies on the eastern edge of Petrovo polje and is closely associated with the sculptor Ivan Meštrović.

Petrovo polje, the Čikola and Svilaja

The municipality’s geographical setting is shaped by its location between Svilaja and Moseć. Petrovo polje forms its central part, and the Čikola flows through this area. Behind Otavice, Svilaja rises with its pastures and forests. The landscape here therefore brings plain and mountain range together, without requiring you to reduce the municipality to just one of these aspects. Those who focus especially on nature and scenery when travelling will find a different emphasis here than on an exploration devoted primarily to historic buildings and archaeological traces.

Smaller waterways are also part of the landscape around Otavice: the Otavac stream flows into the Čikola there. An important former mill and small rapids can be found on the stream near Otavice. The mill recalls its former importance; together with the stream and rapids, it adds a local detail to the picture of the municipality’s waterways.

Otavice and the Meštrović family

The sculptor Ivan Meštrović lived in Otavice until he was 16. The Meštrović family home remains the centre of the village. A ten-minute walk away is the Crkva Presvetog Otkupitelja, built between 1928 and 1930 as the family tomb. It is the final resting place of Ivan Meštrović and his closest family members, including his parents, siblings, wife Olga and their children. The house and church give the story of Meštrović a clearly defined local and family dimension.

Other historic buildings in Otavice include a former malaria station and a former primary school. The malaria station was built right next to the family home. The former school is considered an object of cultural-historical and architectural value. These places add other facets of local history to the sculptor’s story, without reducing all the buildings to the same function or period.

Churches and former settlements

Different layers of history can also be discovered outside Otavice. The present-day Župna crkva sv. Ilije in Kljaci was built in 1871. Remains of an Old Croatian church dating from the 9th to the 10th century were found nearby. The crypt of the parish church in Gradac preserves remains of the early Christian church of sv. Petra. Both places offer traces of church history, but their finds and buildings belong to different periods.

In the decades before Christ, the fortified Illyrian-Dalmatian city of Sinodium stood on Balina glavica in Umljanovići. In the first centuries after Christ, Municipium Magnum, an important urban centre in the Dalmatian hinterland, occupied the same site. The transition from the fortified city to the later centre makes Balina glavica a distinct point of interest for anyone interested in the early history of the Dalmatian hinterland.

Places within the municipality

The church of Hrvatskih mučenika was built in Čavoglave. A folk festival is also held there every year on 5 August, the day of victory of the military-police Operation Oluja. Thus, religious buildings and a recurring annual local event offer different points of interest within the municipality.
