Ružić: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Ružić lies on the edge of Mount Moseć, whose slopes descend towards Petrovo polje and the Čikola River. Those who choose Ružić as their base may wish to rent a holiday apartment.

Culture

On Paraćeva glavica, which is connected with the village of Ružić, stands the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer. The massive stone cube was built between 1928 and 1930, based on an architectural design by Ivan Meštrović, on a 20-metre-high slope above Petrovo polje. The church is the final resting place of Ivan Meštrović and his closest family members.

The church can be reached on foot from Otavice in ten minutes; the entrance can also be reached by car. It is open Tuesdays to Fridays from 10:00 to 18:00 and Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 to 15:00. It is closed on Mondays and public holidays.

The Chapel of Saint Mary in Ružić was rebuilt in the late 1980s. Inside is a wooden Madonna, whose origin is attributed to the Tyrolean tradition. In Gradac, which belongs to the municipality, a parish museum was opened in the crypt of the parish church in 2005. The parish church stands on the foundations of a medieval early Christian church dedicated to Saint Peter; parts of the former church building have been preserved in the crypt.

Landscape

Petrovo polje forms the central part of the municipality of Ružić, and the Čikola River flows through this plain. Near Otavice, the Otavac stream flows into the Čikola. The municipality of Ružić is bordered by Svilaja on one side and Moseć on the other. The Čikola separates Ružić from Gradac and from Meštrović's Otavice.

Activities

The slopes of Svilaja and Moseć are designated for hiking and hunting recreation. In the wider surrounding region, the Planinarsko društvo Svilaja maintains hiking trails on Svilaja and operates the Orlove stine mountain hut on the mountain's slopes. An old watermill still stands on the Otavac near Otavice.

History

The ancient Via Gabiniana ran through the wider area around Ružić, connecting Burnum, Promona, Magnum, Andertium and Salona. Balina glavica in Umljanovići is a multi-layered archaeological site with finds from the Bronze Age and antiquity. Municipium Magnum was located on an important road connecting Salona with the Roman legionary camp at Burnum.

The area around Ružić is also associated with cheese made in a traditional animal-skin bag.
