Municipality of Donja Voća: Cave Finds, Cultural Heritage and Trails

In the Municipality of Donja Voća, exceptionally ancient traces of human history meet church art, a protected cave and trails through the landscape. Špilja Vindija is associated with several distinct discoveries: fossils that offer insights into the distant past, and a hiking trail that leads from Donja Voća past the cave towards the summit of Ravna gora. Špilja Vindija: Archaeology and Hiking Trail

Analyses of fossils show that the Neanderthals from Špilja Vindija lived more than 40,000 years ago. The cave is protected as both a cultural monument and a natural monument. Chapels, Parish History and Art

The Chapel of Sv. Tome is located in the upper part of Donja Voća. Its medieval structure was given a Baroque makeover in the first decades of the 18th century: Baroque vaults and movable furnishings were added to the interior. In 1736, Ivan Krstitelj Ranger painted “Doubting Thomas with Christ” for the main altar. The chapel’s medieval origins and later Baroque design make it a distinctive subject in cultural history.

The parish history also goes back a long way: the parish of Voća is listed in 1334 in the first complete register of parishes in the Diocese of Zagreb. The parish church of Sv. Martina biskupa is located in the centre of the settlement of Donja Voća. Those interested in church history can keep these two distinct historical reference points in mind. The “Virtualna zagorska hiža” offers another insight into local culture; a visit requires prior registration with the Municipality of Donja Voća.

Naive art is also connected with Voća. Slavko Stolnik was born here and created most of his finest works in Voća, inspired by local motifs from everyday life. Stjepan Stolnik and Radovan Švetak found inspiration for their naive art in nature, idyllic landscapes and the people who live there. This artistic perspective complements the older church and parish history with motifs from local life.
