Gornja Voća: Holiday Apartments and Houses

In Gornja Voća, the Virtual Zagorje Hiža stands on Gruntišće Hill. Built in 1917, the traditional single-storey house consists of broad, horizontally layered oak beams coated with clay and straw. The exhibition conveys what life was like for people from the Voća area around a hundred years ago using holograms, 3D technology, wall-mounted tablets and an interactive table. The Virtual Zagorje Hiža can be visited by prior arrangement with the Municipality of Donja Voća.

Culture and History

The Chapel of the Birth of Saint John the Baptist in Gornja Voća was built in 1973 and painted by local artists. It contains three large altarpieces depicting the birth of John the Baptist, the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan and John in prison before his execution.

Nine stone Stations of the Rosary extend across Klenovnik and Gornja Voća and are registered as cultural heritage. Vindija Cave is listed in the Croatian Register of Cultural Goods under Gornja Voća.

At the summit of nearby Kogil breg stands the Baroque wayside shrine Trpeći Krist. It was destroyed during the Second World War and restored in 2014; it dates from around 1770.

Traditions and Events

Voćansko Ivanje in Gornja Voća is connected with the long-standing celebration of Ivanje and the Feast of the Birth of John the Baptist in the Voća area. On 26 June 2021, the event at the Ethno House in Gornja Voća included an artists' colony commemorating Slavko and Stjepan Stolnik. Voćansko Ivanje 2021 also revived Ivanjski krijes, an old Voća tradition, together with the several-hundred-year-old song “Sveti Ivan kresa kuri”.

Nature and Viticulture

During Voćansko Vincekovo, a walk leads through the area where Vindija Cave is located and where Neanderthals lived. Vineyard traditions include pruning a vine and symbolically watering it with wine.
