Rolling hills, vineyards and quiet valleys

The Municipality of Visoko lies on the western slopes of Kalnik. The municipality includes Čanjevo, Presečno, Vrh, Đurinovec, Kračevec, Vinično and Visoko. Its character is rural: hills and gentle undulations alternate with stream valleys, while wooded areas in the north and south form a relatively well-preserved natural landscape. If you are looking for a holiday rental in the municipality, you can start by considering whether the focus of your trip will be the cultural landscape, the wooded areas or the historic sites.

Traditional vineyards on small plots are among the area's defining features. The vines grow on stakes, and distinctive stone or wooden klijeti (wine cellars) stand alongside the vineyards. For visitors who enjoy taking in the landscape and regional architectural styles, this is a tangible reason to see Visoko not merely as a name on a map, but as a cultural landscape.

Near the hamlet of Brijeg, the developed Budin 2000-te viewpoint offers views to the south across the wider area, as far as Zagreb and beyond. Visoko is also home to the Belina Linden Tree, a protected natural heritage site in the category of a monument of park architecture. It was placed under special protection in 1966 and entered in the register of specially protected natural monuments as number 202. Traditionally, the linden tree was a meeting place for local residents and is considered a symbol of Visoko's identity.

Church, fortress and local traditions

The Church of the Holy Trinity offers another way to explore the area's history. Gothic ribs have been preserved in the chancel, along with some partially bricked-up Gothic windows. Its tower has a roof shaped like an octagonal pyramid, considered rare in this area. The site is also significant from a cultural and historical perspective: because of its older architectural structures and continuity dating back to the Romanesque period, it is considered an archaeological site. Visitors interested in architectural history will find several distinct features here, from preserved architectural elements to the site's earlier history as a church location.

The medieval and early modern fortress of Čanjevo lies above the village of the same name, northeast of the municipal seat of Visoko. Its oldest section dates to around the middle of the 15th century. Since 2005, the cultural and tourism event Bitka za utvrdu Čanjevo has been held there annually. It recreates life among the fortress's inhabitants in the late 16th century and a battle against the Ottomans. This makes Čanjevo a special destination for travellers interested in the fortress's history and its later portrayal in an event.

Local customs and cultural events are also part of the municipality's character. At the kinča festival Cvetje i tiči svete Roze, visitors could take part in creative educational workshops and sample traditional cakes. At the LipanjskI folklorni susreti, the programme began with a ceremonial procession through the centre of Visoko and continued on stage in the large hall of the community centre in Visoko. The traditional costume of Visoko is still worn with pride on special occasions. These examples show different sides of local cultural life: community events, folklore and traditional food.

Getting there and choosing where to stay

For travel by car, the developed section of the Zagreb–Varaždin–Goričan motorway runs along the western edge of the municipality. Access is via the Breznički Hum interchange in the Municipality of Breznički Hum. The local road LC 25159 connects Čanjevo to the public road network.

When choosing a holiday rental, use your interests as a guide: the rural landscape and vineyards offer a different focus from church architecture, Čanjevo Fortress or a cultural event. The municipality includes several settlements, including Visoko. When looking for accommodation, therefore, check which place within the municipality suits the sights you plan to explore, rather than assuming you will be close to particular attractions. If you would like to broaden the theme of your stay, you can also discover the Municipality of Ivanec, Gornji Kneginec, the Municipality of Novi Marof, the Municipality of Donja Voća, the Municipality of Maruševec, the Municipality of Jalžabet and the Municipality of Varaždinske Toplice.
