Culture

Within the system of the Great Wall, Koruna was one of the three main fortresses. From this fortress in Mali Ston, the 5.5-kilometre-long Great Wall extends with a branch to Podzvizd; together with the fortified town walls, the harbour gates and the parish church of St Anthony the Abbot from the 14th century, it forms part of the town’s defensive heritage. The church was built between 1309 and 1394.

Mali Ston was planned as a fortified point with a harbour, arsenal, shipyard and defensive complex. The harbour was built in the 15th century based on the model of Dubrovnik’s old town harbour. Mali Ston is registered as a settlement.

Cuisine

Mali Ston is associated with shellfish farming, and local restaurants are known for fresh seafood specialities. Oysters are associated with the Bay of Mali Ston; the conditions in the bay are suitable for farming them. Oysters are eaten with lemon, while oyster soup is considered a traditional dish.

Getting around

The Walls of Ston have an entrance in Mali Ston at Koruna Fortress; from there, visitors can walk along the Great Wall to the Barabanata Tower. A walking route leads from Ston to Mali Ston via the walls or a promenade.
