Vučina Bay near Trpanj in the northwest of the Pelješac Peninsula was designated a significant landscape in 1975. It offers a specific point of reference for anyone who puts landscapes and nature first when deciding where to travel. The Dubrovnik-Neretva County also offers a range of ideas: protected natural areas, hiking and cycling routes, and archaeological and cultural sites. When choosing your holiday apartment, consider whether Peljesac itself is to be your main focus or whether you would also like to include other destinations in the county in your trip.

Landscapes and nature in the county
Among the designated natural areas is Lastovo Islands Nature Park. It was designated in 2006 and covers 195 km²: 143 km² of sea and 52 km² of land. The park comprises 46 islands, islets and reefs, including Lastovo and Sušac. A boat tour in the nature park includes a stop on Mladina Island in Saplun Bay, where swimming and diving are possible. On Lastovo, Rača Cave is an archaeological site with traces of Illyrian and Roman presence.
Nature and culture also come together on Mljet: the national park is the oldest marine protected area in the Mediterranean. Its most visited site is the Benedictine monastery on the island of St. Mary in Veliko jezero. The county is also home to the Prud Special Ornithological Reserve in the lower reaches of the Neretva, an important breeding ground for wetland birds, and the Modro oko Special Nature Reserve with Lake Desne. There, a lake and a system of canals provide a habitat for migratory birds. These destinations appeal to different interests in nature; choose according to the landscapes you want to shape your trip.
Archaeology, history and regional experiences
The Narona Archaeological Museum opened in 2007 as Croatia’s first museum built in situ. The Ereš Tower is an open-air epigraphy museum featuring Latin inscriptions and Roman monuments from the ancient city of Narona. During the summer months, the cultural event “Naronitansko kulturno ljeto” was held at the museum, with theatre performances, exhibitions, concerts and book presentations. The Church of Sv. Vid displays finds from an early Christian church and a medieval cemetery. Those interested in archaeology and history can explore them in different ways: through a museum visit, inscriptions and finds at religious sites.
Other archaeological sites include Vela spila above Vela Luka on the island of Korčula, one of Croatia’s most important archaeological sites, and Rača Cave on Lastovo. On the uninhabited island of Ošjak, a hiking trail runs around the entire island. Another marked trail leads from Babino Polje to Odysseus’ Cave. These examples can inspire a trip that combines nature with culture and history, without making every leg of the journey the same.
Routes, water and choosing a travel focus
The county offers a range of described options for active days. More than 200 km of hiking trails are marked on Lastovo. The UBLI–LASTOVO cycling route is 9.45 km long, paved and rated difficulty level 3 out of 5. Mljet National Park has hiking and cycling trails; canoes, kayaks and bicycles can be rented at Mali Most. Plan your trip around whether you would rather hike, cycle or get out on the water.
On the Neretva, a traditional boat trip takes you through narrow canals and tributaries. Hosts explain local fishing and citrus cultivation along the way. When choosing a holiday apartment in Peljesac, the first consideration is therefore the area you want to focus on: would you like to centre your stay on the peninsula or include other places in the county? The Dubrovnik-Neretva County has regular boat services operating daily.
