Nature

History

Lovran’s old town is a preserved historic centre that was once enclosed by defensive walls and bastions. Lovran’s town tower is now the only surviving remnant of the former fortification system. At the same time, the tower serves as an exhibition space and offers views of the old town, the sea and the Kvarner Islands.

The Stubica Gate is the only surviving original town gate and connects Lovran with its harbour. Mandrać is Lovran’s historic harbour, connected to the old town through this gate.

Culture

The Church of the Holy Trinity is Lovran’s oldest surviving monument. The Romanesque Church of Saint George was built in the 12th century; its sanctuary contains frescoes from the 15th century. The Church of Saint John the Baptist was built in the 14th century in Lovran’s old town on the foundations of an earlier 12th-century religious building.

The portal lunette “Relief of Saint George in Lovran” is a wooden relief created by local masters at the beginning of the 19th century. The characteristic elements of the old town also include the cortiles: small courtyards enclosed by stone walls with central water cisterns, regarded as jewels of medieval urban architecture.

Cuisine

Marunada takes place every October as a gastronomic festival in honour of Lovran’s marrons. It offers roasted marrons, desserts, other marron dishes, spirits and marron beer.

Tourism

Villa Fernandea was the first establishment built on the Riviera exclusively for tourism. It opened as a guesthouse in 1873 and continues to retain its original tourist function to this day.
