Coast and trails on Učka

Medveja Beach is a white pebble beach. It was shaped by a stream flowing down from the slopes of Učka, as well as by wind and waves. If you want to combine time by the sea with some activity, there is also a historic route: the old footpath from Medveja to Lovranska Draga makes for a scenic hike. Along the way, it offers a glimpse of the former connection between the fishing village and the gardens and olive groves inland.

Lovranska Draga lies on a steep ridge, 360 metres above sea level, within Učka Nature Park. The Slap educational trail starts here and leads to a waterfall on Učka. The trail runs through a sweet chestnut forest, and information boards provide details about this endemic plant species. The trail offers a practical way to combine time in nature with learning about plant life.

Another hiking option is the Chestnut Route. It runs above Liganj on the slopes of Učka and climbs from Lovran towards Vojak. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider whether you would prefer to focus on the coast or excursions on the mountain slopes. When choosing a location, it is worth considering where the experiences are: the beach is in Medveja, the educational trail starts in Lovranska Draga, and the Chestnut Route runs above Liganj.

In Lovran, the Lungomare coastal promenade offers another way to experience the area. It connects Lovran with other places on the Opatija Riviera and affords views of the sea and villas in the Secession style. The promenade thus complements the trails on Učka with a coastal perspective.

Lovran’s buildings and maritime history

Lovran’s history can be traced through buildings from different periods. The Church of St George was built in the 12th century in the Romanesque style; its sanctuary is decorated with 15th-century frescoes. The Church of St John the Baptist stands in the old town on the foundations of an earlier 12th-century religious building. Inside, frescoes depict scenes from the saint’s life. The Church of the Holy Trinity is considered the oldest surviving monument in Lovran.

Remains of the former town fortifications also tell the story of the past: the town tower is the only surviving remnant of the former defensive system. Stubica is the only surviving original town gate; the gate once connected Lovran with its harbour. The small harbour of Mandrać was the centre of the town’s economic activity. Together, these places give an impression of how the town, harbour and fortifications were connected.

The House of the Lovran Guc has permanent exhibitions of boat models from the northern Adriatic, as well as the “Quarneroli” exhibition. It tells the story of sailors from the northern Adriatic who took part in an expedition to the Arctic Circle. The top floor of the tower in the house is set up as a viewing point and provides historical information about the old town and Lovran. Villa Fernandea is another reminder of the history of tourism: it was the first building on the Riviera constructed exclusively for tourist purposes.

Lovran has direct bus connections with Rijeka, Zagreb and Pula. If you arrive by train in Rijeka or Matulji, you can continue to Lovran by car, taxi or bus.
