Island Nature Around Korčula and Lastovo
Near the town of Korčula lies an archipelago of twenty uninhabited islands. Their shores are accessible, while the islands themselves are densely covered with macchia. The archipelago also includes Ošjak: this uninhabited, forested island has a hiking trail that goes all the way around it. If you enjoy exploring on foot, you’ll find a specific nature experience here, set in a clearly defined location.
The Lastovo Islands Nature Park offers a different focus. A total of 145 bird species have been recorded throughout the archipelago, which also has more than 200 kilometres of hiking and cycling trails. Rača Cave is on Lastovo. It is 70 metres long, is considered a geomorphological natural monument and is also an important archaeological site. Lastovo therefore brings together nature watching, outdoor activities and a site of particular archaeological interest.
Mljet: Lakes, Forest Trail and Monastery History
Mljet National Park is the oldest marine protected area in the Mediterranean. In its karst landscape, Veliko jezero and Malo jezero form a rare geological and oceanographic phenomenon. A marked forest trail leads from the Small Lake to Pomena. When planning your day, you can choose between a nature-focused experience and a specific route, without treating the two as the same thing.
A Benedictine monastery dating from the 12th century stands on the island of Sveti Marija in Veliko jezero. The natural setting and architectural history offer different interests to explore on a trip to Mljet: the lakes shape the landscape, while the monastery is a historic point of interest.
Culture, History and Regional Traditions
Carnival is celebrated every year on Lastovo. Elaborate costumes and masks are part of the festivities, which also preserve a living oral tradition. In Čilipi, folklore events take place every Sunday from Easter to the end of October. They showcase the customs and traditions of Konavle. These two examples offer insights into different forms of regional culture.
Historic sites also offer specific points of interest. The Sponza Palace houses the Dubrovnik Archive, with historical documents from Dubrovnik and the surrounding areas. In Cavtat, the old town is the ancient Epidaurum; its town plan dates from the Middle Ages. The Račić family mausoleum was built in 1921 on the site of the 15th-century Chapel of St. Rok.
In Dubrovnik, the historic Stradun is a popular promenade, also used by tourists. From the summit of Minčeta Fortress, you can look out over Dubrovnik and the surrounding landscape. Sokol Fortress offers views over the whole of Konavle; as you climb, you can experience the sophisticated defensive system of the historic Republic of Dubrovnik.
A Trip Along the Neretva
A traditional boat trip winds through the narrow channels and tributaries of the Neretva. Along the way, your host shows you how people in the Neretva region fish and grow citrus fruit. The trip includes regional specialities and Neretva wine served in wooden jugs. If you’re interested in local ways of life and food, you’ll find a different kind of travel experience here than on the hiking trails or at the historic buildings.
