Discover Međimurska: River Nature, Cycling Routes and Culture
Accommodation in Međimurska
In Međimurska, river landscapes meet living traditions and a varied cultural landscape. The Mura-Drava Regional Park offers insights into wetland habitats, while cycling routes and a forest educational trail make active exploration possible. At the Treasury of Međimurje, the history of Čakovec Fortress and the region’s oral traditions take centre stage. You can shape your trip around whether you are most interested in nature, activity, culture or wine.

River Landscapes and Wetland Habitats
In Međimurje County, the Mura-Drava Regional Park covers 16,980.34 hectares, equivalent to 19.42 per cent of the county’s total area. Particularly significant wetland habitats include riparian forests and wet meadows, as well as oxbow lakes, abandoned riverbeds and meanders. Gravel banks and steep, erosion-formed riverbanks also form part of this varied landscape. If you are interested in river nature, you will find a range of habitats here rather than a single, uniform setting.
One way to access this natural area is the “Vrata Pažuta” forest educational trail in Donja Dubrava. It is 1,750 metres long and intended for pedestrians and cyclists. The trail is one of the access points to the protected riparian forest and the “Veliki Pažut” Special Ornithological Reserve at the confluence of the Mura and Drava rivers. Its length and designated modes of travel give you clear guidance when deciding whether to include a walk or cycle ride in your trip.
Cycling with Different Highlights
The Cyclist-Welcome network in Međimurje includes 888 kilometres of cycling routes on and off paved roads. Along the Mura and Drava rivers, there are flat cycling routes suitable for families and leisurely rides. If you are travelling with children or prefer a more relaxed ride, you can specifically consider these as a family-friendly option. The extensive network also includes routes on both paved and unpaved paths.
The Pušipel Trail offers a different kind of ride: this 53.9-kilometre circular route passes through the landscape of the Međimurje Wine Road. Alongside the flat riverside routes, you can therefore choose a clearly designated loop with a connection to the wine-growing landscape.
Fortress History and Oral Traditions
The multimedia museum Treasury of Međimurje divides its exhibition into the sections “Century of the Fortress” and “Miniatures”. The permanent exhibition “Centuries of Fortification” explores the development and original purpose of Čakovec Fortress, as well as its defence system in the Middle Ages and early modern period. It thus focuses both on the fortress’s history and on how its military function evolved over time.
“Miniatures” is devoted to Međimurje’s intangible heritage and oral traditions. These include traditional crafts, protected language groups, customs, folklore and mythology, as well as stories about supernatural beings. If you are travelling with your family, you can explore the region from a different perspective here than on an excursion into the river landscape: the focus is on inherited stories and cultural expressions. The Dr Rudolf Steiner Centre is also located in Donji Kraljevec and serves in Croatia as a reference centre for implementing the national programme for biodynamic agriculture.
Wine Route and Views
Along the accessible Međimurje Wine Road, there are around 30 family-run wineries. The wineries in the HORTUS CROATIAE group offer wine tastings and the opportunity to buy their wines directly on site. The wine route is therefore of interest not only as a landscape for a circular ride, but also as a way to experience wine tastings and direct sales at the wineries. The approximate number of wineries gives an impression of the regional wine scene, without implying that every individual winery offers the same things.
Another notable viewpoint is the tower on Mađerka Hill. It is 27 metres high; 104 steps lead to a rooftop platform at an altitude of 361 metres. The tower offers a distinct excursion option alongside the cycling route, wine tasting and museum. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Međimurska, choosing the experiences you have planned can help you organise your trip around your interests.
