The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross was built in 1897 in the southeastern part of the village of Vratišinec and is a protected immovable cultural asset. In front of its main façade stand two late Baroque sculptures of the Roman martyrs John and Paul, dating from 1779. The church thus brings together a building from the late 19th century and older Baroque sculptures. The Old School Building, constructed in 1874, stands in the centre of the village: a single-storey building with a rectangular floor plan, Neoclassical façade design and flat pilasters between the windows. Folk music, theatre and cultural traditions
Dr. Vinko Žganec is at the heart of several cultural offerings. The exhibition at the Spomen-dom dr. Vinka Žganca presents the life and significant contribution of the Croatian ethnomusicologist and melographer in a modern and engaging way. Every year, “Žgančevi zapisi” is held in memory of his life’s work, presenting the cultural heritage of Međimurje folk songs that he recorded. In December, Vratišinec and members of the KUD also organise the event “Večer Žgančevih zapisa”.
At “Vratišinske vesele vurice”, folklore ensembles and groups from Croatia and abroad perform at a traditional folklore evening. Other events have their own focus: “PJEVAJMO, PJEVAJMO MARIJI” is a Marian devotional concert held in the parish church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross for the Feast of the Snows, while “Božić u srcu” combines a Christmas concert with a live nativity scene. “Susreti dramskih amatera” features theatre performances for children, young people and older residents. For families with cultural interests spanning different age groups, this multigenerational focus is a particularly useful feature.
Food culture and shared activities
At the “Mamičina škrija” event, dishes made from traditional family recipes are available to sample. These include “pečena šulenka”, “močjek” and “trgnci s maslom i trojstvom”. The event has been held regularly since 2010, giving regional food culture a tangible culinary focus. At “Vratišinski kotlić”, residents and visitors from neighbouring municipalities and towns can cook in teams in the centre of Vratišinec. Teams must have at least three members and register in advance. This makes the event different from a tasting: it involves cooking together.
The Mamičina škrinja Ethnographic Collection in Gornji Kraljevec displays objects, utensils, clothing, tools and crockery from rural life more than 100 years ago.
